Job Summary
Responsible for mapping out and measuring features of the Earth's surface. Establishes land, air, and water boundaries for airports, the creation of legal documents, and for property assessment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Plot out maps to establish land, airspace, and water boundaries.
- Write descriptions of land for deeds, leases, and other legal documents.
- Map out airspace for airports.
- Take measurements of construction sites.
- Ascertain boundaries for mineral sites.
- Provide information on the shape, contour, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features.
- Collect data and make calculations.
- Map geographic information using data from surveys and other resources.
- Measure distances, angles, and directions on Earth's surface.
- Pinpoint reference points on surveys.
- Determine precise location of features.
- Use specialized equipment in survey area.
- Research legal records.
- Analyze previous boundaries.
- Determine location for new boundaries.
- Provide expert testimony in court regarding their work for legal cases.
- Record, verify, and analyze results.
- Prepare plots and reports.
- Construct maps.
- Use satellite observations to measure large areas of the earth's surface.
- Mark sites for subsurface explorations.
- Search for places where petroleum might be extracted.
- Survey rivers and other bodies of water to determine shorelines and water depth.
- Use GPS to locate reference points.
- Interpret and check results produced by GPS.
- Take field measurements with survey party.
- Adjust and operate survey instruments.
- Compile notes and make sketches.
- Enter data obtained from surveying instruments into computers.
