The department offers BA, MA, and PhD degrees, and we also have a vibrant program in Heritage Preservation. We have a long tradition of supporting world history, and members of our faculty produce award-winning research in cultural and intellectual, U.S., World, and European history. Our historians are also known for their work in public history and heritage preservation related to the civil rights movement. Historians at Georgia State have also built exciting collaborations with colleagues in allied units that have made the department central to the intellectual life of the college.

The Department of History at Georgia State University (downtown Atlanta campus) invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Latin@/x History. The department welcomes applications from scholars whose work focuses on any aspect of the history of people of Latin American origin or descent in the United States. The position will begin in August 2025. Successful candidates are expected to develop an independent research agenda, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, supervise and mentor students, and participate in institutional service activities. Tenure-track faculty typically teach a 2-2 course load, developing upper-division undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in History and supervising graduate research for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. They will also periodically teach an introductory survey course in US History from colonial times to the present. The department invites applicants with a passion for teaching and mentoring students like those who attend Georgia State. The successful candidate may also have the option to hold interdisciplinary affiliations or joint appointments with other departments (such as World Languages and Cultures or the Center for Latin American Studies) as appropriate.

A doctorate in history or a closely allied discipline, awarded by date of hire.

Coursework and research experience that demonstrates the training and ability needed to conduct and publish scholarly research in area of expertise; to direct graduate research in area of expertise; and to teach lower-division, upper-division, and graduate courses in area of expertise. Demonstrated ability to teach lower-division U.S. History courses or other classes at the undergraduate level.

Candidates are expected to establish and maintain a successful research program; teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels; train doctoral students in the historical method; and participate in department, college, and university life.

A criminal history check is required.
