75% of time - Clinical Practice

Each rehabilitation team member provides services according to the laws of the State of Ohio governing licensed professionals; standards of practice, scope of practice, clinical guidelines, and codes of ethics published by respective national professional associations; and OSUWMC policies and procedures governing the work of licensed clinical professionals. We embody the Buckeye Spirit in everything we do through our shared values of Inclusiveness, Determination, Empathy, Sincerity, Ownership and Innovation. These core areas are integral to successful clinical practice. The Resident will be subject to other clinical performance assessments outlined by the residency curriculum and developed in accordance to standards established by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE).

Clinical Practice consists of patient/family orientation, evaluations, assessments, observations, treatment procedures, training, interventions, educational sessions, and activity counseling, conducted as part of a team approach or as a single practitioner. Documentation of patient care and planned progression are integral components of clinical practice. The resident will practice in several specialty practice areas within the Acute Care Setting as well as observational experience both within and outside the physical therapy setting.

*Both evaluation and treatment sessions may be conducted in individual sessions with one or more practitioners, in groups of patients with similar or diverse skill levels, or within groupings of patients who focus on individual goals but participate in care within general treatment areas. Site of care may be the patient care unit, designated team or skill-classified treatment areas (functional and diagnosis specific treatment site or therapeutic exercise areas), other locations within the medical center, or in the community.

*Professionals use a wide variety of approaches to evaluation and treatment, consistent with the individual needs of persons served, their families, and caregivers. Approaches include: "salient factors" - those key issues that must be addressed to achieve the established discharge plan; use of clinical pathways, algorithms, and clinical guidelines; use of specific protocols to address component functions or skills established within the Rehabilitation Plan of Care (as applicable to venue of care). Each practitioner within the patient care team is responsible for assuring continuity of care among team members.

*Education/training and support sessions are as important as sessions that focus on physical or other specified skills.

*Clinical practice for licensed professionals also includes the supervision of licensed support staff and entry-level students as assigned. Patient care is delegated in accordance with department policy, which reflects the laws and rules of applicable state practice acts.

*Documentation requirements and format are performed according to policies and procedures established within the OSUWMC Rehabilitation and follow the Standards of Practice Guidelines established by the APTA.

*Productivity expectations are established in support of the departments budgeted fiscal responsibility and are defined in the departments policy and procedure manual.
