There are two vacancies: one at the Student Disability Specialist 3 SV level and one at the Student Disability Specialist 4 SV level. The title/pay level of this position will be based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate identified for hire.

DESCRIPTION

The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) at UC San Diego works with undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students with documented disabilities (psychological, psychiatric, learning, attention, chronic health, physical, vision, hearing, autism spectrum disorders, and acquired brain injuries), reviewing documentation and, through an interactive process with the student, determining reasonable accommodations.

The OSD also serves as a resource to UC San Diego faculty and staff who are providing accommodations to students in classrooms and labs across campus. The OSD has developed working relationships with other offices on campus to streamline services to students with disabilities.

Functions as the organizational expert with regard to determining reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Deals independently with a wide range of accommodation issues. Decisions can impact university compliance and liability under federal and state disability law and regulations. On own initiative rises to manager's attention particularly contentious issues and/or especially complex situations.

Work is completed with a high level of independence under the direction of the OSD Assistant Director. Provides disability management counseling to students with disability(ies) as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, the ADA-As Amended, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Assembly Bill 746, as it relates to OSD's mission. When presented with sensitive ADA/504 related issues by individual students, parents, faculty, and/or broader campus community (the colleges, Student Affairs, Campus Counsel, Academic Dept. Chairs, graduate program administrators or School of Medicine faculty and administrators, Veterans Administration), researches and responds to the issue(s) appropriately. Independently prioritizes and completes ongoing tasks following established departmental guidelines, University policies, and State/Federal laws. Other assignments are made by the Director on a project basis. Work is reviewed periodically with the Director through status reports, Disability Specialist meetings, and when actions necessitate a deviation from standard guidelines.

Conducts or reviews student intake interviews involving students with disabilities. Counsels office staff and students on disability management issues. Develops and maintains relations with campus departments, community agencies, and national organizations.

Performs research and development of training and evaluation tools, screening mechanisms, and teaching modules.

Hiring Salary Range for the Student Disability Specialist 3 SV: $81,000 - $90,000/year

Hiring Salary Range for the Student Disability Specialist 4 SV: $81,000 - $95,000/year

  • Work Schedule: Hybrid (3 days a week on the La Jolla campus, 2 days working from home).

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications for both titles:

  • Working knowledge of ADA and Section 504, as related to the provision of academic accommodations in a post-secondary environment. Advanced knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for students with disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of disability classifications, ADA/Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (defining disability, significant/functional limitations and mitigating factors), and current related legislation, as well as the DSM-V codes. Advanced knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining disability accommodation issues, including the Disability Compliance Office procedures.

  • Demonstrated skill in interviewing techniques, training, teaching and empowering students with disabilities.

  • Working knowledge of counseling theories/strategies, interviewing techniques and psychosocial aspects applicable to training/teaching/empowering diverse educational and disabled student populations, through a combination of individual and group settings.

  • Working knowledge of research, development and training strategies appropriate to the development/maintenance of skill levels consistent with university-level standards of satisfactory performance, specifically, disability management, life skills and academic learning skills (time, study and exam management), as well as crisis intervention experience.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of diagnostic, analytical, research, problem-solving, team building and teaching/student development techniques/methodology.

  • Strong, well-demonstrated verbal, aural and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated skill in disability-management and individual and group counseling.

  • Skilled in coordinating service provision, and co-facilitation of group support, including skill in addressing emerging disability issues of independence/life skill facilitation, and counseling techniques specific to understanding and counseling re: psychosocial aspects of disability.

Additional Qualifications for Student Disability Specialist 3 SV:

  • Advanced degree in related area and at least 1 year of experience in college-level disability support service and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques involved in employee's specialty, for example, learning disorders, mobility disability, visual impairment, etc.

Additional Qualifications for Student Disability Specialist 4 SV:

  • Advanced degree in related areas such as Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education Counseling and Higher Education Counseling with typically 4 years related experience in a college-level disability support service and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Advanced knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques involved in employee's specialty, for example, learning disorders, mobility disability, visual impairment, etc.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Duties may require direct contact and/or supervision of children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required.
