POSITION SUMMARY: Implement nutrition services policies in the Wisconsin WIC Operations Manual. Provide individual counseling sessions for nutrition-related problems as identified in client nutrition assessments. Refer clients to nutrition and social service programs and health care, as necessary.

POSITION-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Coordinate and implement direct nutrition services policies in the Wisconsin WIC Operations Manual.
  • Perform participant nutrition assessments, high-risk and routine nutrition counseling and education, community and provider referrals and assign food packages. Conduct nutrition education classes.
  • Appropriately document nutrition assessments, goals, contact types, nutrition education topics and follow-up plans.
  • Coordinate outreach resources when verbal referrals are insufficient
  • Provide health care staff in-service training and orientation as directed by the WIC Project Director.
  • Train new nutrition services staff and dietetic interns/students.
  • Ensure nutrition services staff assessments, health screenings and risk assignment, nutrition counseling, education, care plans, referrals and food packages are appropriate.
  • Monitor nutrition services staff (conduct annual observations, high risk file reviews, chart audits). Document results and follow-up on corrective or improvement actions.
  • Assist with nutrition services staff performance evaluations.
  • Lead routinely scheduled nutrition services staff team meetings (at least bimonthly).
  • Develop relevant nutrition display boards and pamphlets appropriate for participants.
  • Attend statewide WIC meetings and local work groups.
  • Analyze nutrition services reports to coordinate nutrition services, plans and policies.
  • Authorize Wisconsin WIC prescription requests processing and follow up with participants.
  • Attend continuing education webinars/conferences and review current literature to stay abreast of professional updates as well as new policies and procedures.
  • Competently perform support staff duties at times of high client volume or low staff coverage, to meet participant needs.
  • Participate in project activities or community outreach that promote nutrition and/or breastfeeding, (i.e. National Nutrition Month, Farmer's Market Nutrition Program, National Breastfeeding Month etc).
  • Keep orientation and training materials up to date.
  • Assist WIC Project Director with implementing policies and developing procedures according to WIC operations manual.
  • Consult with WIC Project Director regarding staffing needs and overall WIC services (i.e. clinic flow, outreach etc).
  • Perform any other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Oversee departmental operations in absence of WIC Project Director

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education: 1) Is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), or passes the CDR examination within 6 months of hire, and is a Certified Dietitian (CD) in the State of Wisconsin.

2) Holds a bachelor's degree in the field of nutrition from an accredited college or university and has a minimum of 2 years of job-related experience, or

3) Holds a master's or doctoral degree in nutrition from an accredited college or university and has a minimum of 1 year of job-related experience.

CPR Certified: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Experience:Prefer one-year supervisory experience in a clinic, hospital setting, or WIC clinic. Specialized training in breastfeeding promotion and support (WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum Training level 4 designated breastfeeding expert (DBE) or must receive specialized training within one year of hire).

Expertise: Excellent interpersonal communication skills and empathy toward clients. Ability to work well with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural staff and groups. Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to respond positively to flexible and changing work schedule and environment. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work in team environment. Must be willing and able to assume responsibilities assigned as a member of the health care team. Must be able to provide safe, efficient, and effective nutrition care. Previous skills and special interest with children a plus.

Language: Comprehend and use basic written or spoken language to communicate information and ideals.

Travel: May vary based on Organizational need.
