Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, the Vice President of Outpatient and Ambulatory Nursing Services provides executive leadership for nursing practice, operations, quality, patient and family experience, workforce engagement, financial performance, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across Children's National Hospital's outpatient, community-based, and extended campus ambulatory settings.

As a member of the Nursing Executive Leadership Team, the VP of Ambulatory Nursing collaborates with physicians, operational leaders, clinical teams, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary stakeholders to strengthen outpatient care delivery, improve access, advance nursing excellence, enhance patient outcomes, and support organizational growth. The VP of Ambulatory Nursing fosters a culture of safety, quality, accountability, equity, and professional development across the outpatient ambulatory continuum.

Minimum Education -

  • Master's Degree (Required)
  • BSN (Required)
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), PhD, DHA, EdD, or other doctoral degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience -

  • 15 years Nursing experience to include at least 7 years of clinical experience (Required)
  • 5 years of ambulatory care leadership experience. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience leading multi-site outpatient operations and multidisciplinary teams. (Required)
  • Proven success managing budgets, quality outcomes, workforce engagement, and change initiatives. (Required)
  • Pediatric healthcare experience is highly preferred.

Required Skills/Knowledge -

  • Deep expertise in pediatric ambulatory nursing, family-centered care, population health, care coordination, patient access, chronic disease management, and evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Executive capability leading complex, multi-site outpatient operations, including workflows, access, capacity, productivity, performance improvement, standardization, innovation, and transformation.
  • Strong knowledge of nursing standards, regulatory and accreditation requirements, Magnet principles, shared governance, quality and safety frameworks, and professional practice expectations.
  • Proven ability to define, monitor, and act on metrics that drive measurable quality, safety, patient experience, workforce, operational, and financial outcomes.
  • Executive knowledge of healthcare finance, budgeting, workforce planning, productivity, resource allocation, business planning, value-based care, and strategic alignment with enterprise priorities.
  • Exceptional communication, influence, negotiation, relationship-building, collaboration, conflict resolution, consensus-building, and stakeholder alignment skills across executive, clinical, operational, academic, community, patient, and family partners.
  • Proven ability to build engaged, accountable, inclusive, high-performing teams through leadership development, mentorship, succession planning, professional growth, systems thinking, business acumen, and strategic judgment.

Required Licenses and Certifications -

  • Current Registered Nurse unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse in District of Columbia (Required)
  • Current Registered Nurse, unencumbered compact state licensure as a registered nurse as applicable (MD, VA) (Required) Board-certified as a nurse executive Upon Hire (Required)
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (Required)
  • Ambulatory Nursing or specialty nursing certification preferred.

Functional Accountabilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Assist with the development and execution of the enterprise strategic plan for ambulatory nursing, aligning practice, operations, workforce, access, care coordination, service growth, and performance priorities with Children's National Hospital's mission and pediatric care goals.
  • Establish enterprise standards for nursing practice, staffing models, workflows, metrics, and performance expectations across ambulatory settings.
  • Drive operational excellence through executive oversight of analytics, process improvement, workforce optimization, patient flow, resource stewardship, innovation, and care model transformation.
  • Forge executive partnerships with physician and operational leaders to advance nursing excellence, capacity management, care coordination, quality, safety, and sustainable growth.

Workforce Strategy, Optimization and Transformation

  • Architect and govern enterprise workforce strategy across ambulatory nursing to optimize workforce planning, organizational capability, and leadership capacity.
  • Cultivate and sustain an engaged, inclusive, accountable, and high-performing ambulatory nursing workforce aligned with enterprise priorities and service excellence.
  • Champion executive leadership development, coaching, and mentorship for Executive Directors, Directors, Nurse Managers, and ambulatory nursing leaders.
  • Advance succession planning, leadership pipeline development, retention strategies, and professional advancement to ensure sustained ambulatory nursing excellence.
  • Design and implement the future-state organizational model; integrate service lines; drive change management.
  • Champion an enterprise culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, equity, inclusion, safety, and continuous learning to accelerate organizational transformation.
  • Sponsor and govern transformational nursing initiatives that advance Children's National's mission, strategic priorities, operating model, and long-term organizational performance.

Enterprise Clinical Excellence & Professional Nursing Practice

  • Provide enterprise executive accountability for professional nursing practice across outpatient clinics, specialty programs, community-based sites, and extended campus ambulatory settings to drive clinical excellence and professional nursing practice.
  • Advance and scale evidence-based pediatric nursing models that improve clinical outcomes, quality, safety, equity, access, and patient and family experience.
  • Direct the ambulatory nursing quality, patient safety, accreditation readiness, regulatory compliance, and professional practice agenda.
  • Champion continuous improvement, innovation, research, and evidence-based practice as core drivers of ambulatory nursing excellence.
  • Oversight of Magnet principles, shared governance, professional accountability, and leadership development across ambulatory nursing teams.
  • Define, govern, and monitor enterprise metrics for safety, quality, outcomes, access, efficiency, equity, workforce engagement, and patient experience.

Financial Stewardship

  • Provide executive stewardship for ambulatory nursing financial performance by leading portfolio budgeting, resource allocation, business planning, strategic investment decisions, workforce planning, and productivity management.
  • Provide executive oversight of financial, operational, quality, and workforce performance by advancing strategies that strengthen efficiency, productivity, care quality, value, sustainable growth, and responsible financial stewardship across ambulatory nursing services.

Executive Communications and Strategic Engagement

  • Provide executive oversight for Ambulatory Nursing communications, brand strategy, social media, executive messaging, annual reports, recognition strategy, and partnerships with Marketing & Communications.
  • Cultivate executive, clinical, operational, academic, community, and family partnerships to align priorities, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate organizational transformation.
  • Establish communication governance, engagement strategies, and feedback systems that advance transparency, alignment, accountability, and trust across the organization.
  • Develop executive expectations for quality, safety, evidence-based practice, and regulatory communication to guide directors, managers, and frontline teams.

Nursing Quality Outcomes & Effectiveness

  • Define ambulatory nursing KPIs to monitor the effectiveness of quality outcome measures related to safety, access, clinical effectiveness, patient experience, workforce engagement, and operational performance.
  • Use dashboards, analytics, benchmarking, and performance reviews to evaluate outcomes and identify improvement opportunities in the focus areas of quality, safety, patient experience and care coordination.
  • Advance nursing-sensitive indicators and outcome measures that reflect excellence in pediatric ambulatory care.

Executive Representation & External Relations

  • Forge and steward strategic partnerships with physicians, operational executives, clinical leaders, advanced practice providers, academic institutions, community organizations, and external stakeholders to advance ambulatory nursing priorities.
  • Serve as a visible executive ambassador for Children's National Hospital and the nursing profession in regional, national, and professional forums.
  • Influence the advancement of pediatric ambulatory nursing practice, healthcare policy, and professional standards through active executive engagement in professional organizations and healthcare forums.
  • Champion interdisciplinary and external collaboration strengthens pediatric outcomes, expands access to care, advances community partnerships, and improves organizational performance.

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children's National believes an individual's base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children's National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual's combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. Children's National is committed to providing a fair and competitive total rewards package to each of our employees. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
