Mercy Hospital St. Louis is seeking compassionate and motivated Patient Care Tech to join our fast-paced Emergency Department team. As a PCT, you'll work alongside nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide exceptional care to patients experiencing a wide range of medical conditions and emergencies.

This role offers valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same.

???? What You'll Do

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the Patient Care Tech provides direct patient care and support services to help patients achieve their highest level of wellness.

Responsibilities include both clinical and non-clinical duties while collaborating with the healthcare team to deliver exceptional emergency care.

Direct Patient Care
  • Assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living
  • Assist with ambulation, repositioning, transfers, and mobility needs
  • Monitor and document dietary intake and output
  • Observe for skin breakdown and provide preventative care measures
  • Obtain and accurately document vital signs and patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Assist with patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and belongings
Emergency Department Clinical Support

Depending on department needs, training, and competency validation, duties may include:

  • Point-of-care testing and specimen collection
  • Blood culture collection
  • Enteral tube feeding
  • Non-sterile wound care and dressing changes
  • IV removal
  • Suture tray setup
  • Chest tube setup
  • Visual acuity testing
  • Pelvic exam setup
  • Burn dressing changes and debridement
  • Handheld Bovie pen assistance
  • Whirlpool wound care treatments
Team Collaboration
  • Recognize and report changes in patient condition immediately
  • Communicate effectively with nurses, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members
  • Utilize sound clinical judgment and effective time management skills Demonstrate flexibility in a fast-paced emergency care environment
  • Accept delegated responsibilities while practicing within established scope of practice
  • Perform clerical duties as needed, including answering phones and monitoring call systems

Mercy offers a 175-hour Department of Health and Senior Services-approved PCA Training Program, completed during new hire orientation and within the first 90 days of employment.

In addition, Mercy's PCA training is an accredited U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program, providing valuable hands-on experience and recognized credentials to support your healthcare career journey.

Qualifications Education

* High School Diploma or GED

* Currently enrolled in a healthcare career program (including healthcare-focused high school programs)

* Current Mercy co-workers are encouraged to apply

Experience

???? No prior healthcare experience required

Preferred

* Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification

???? Additional Requirements

* Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 1 month of hire

* Complete PCA competencies within 3 months of hire

???? Physical Requirements

* Frequently lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds

* Prolonged standing and walking throughout shifts

* Ability to bend, kneel, squat, reach, twist, and grasp as required for patient care
