We are seeking a Director of Transportation Safety, Compliance & Training to lead our transportation safety, regulatory compliance, driver development, and organizational risk management programs. This position is responsible for establishing the enterprise vision for transportation safety and compliance while leading the organization's efforts to reduce risk, improve driver performance, strengthen regulatory compliance, and promote a culture of operational excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership



  • Provide strategic leadership and executive oversight for the Company's Transportation Safety, Compliance, and Driver Training programs.
  • Lead and develop the Transportation Safety, Compliance & Training organization, including direct supervision of the Director of Transportation Compliance Programs and associated leadership personnel.
  • Provide functional leadership and organizational oversight of the Regional Transportation Compliance Managers through the Director of Transportation Compliance Programs to ensure consistent execution of enterprise compliance initiatives.
  • Establish departmental objectives, organizational priorities, performance expectations, and enterprise key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Develop succession plans, organizational capabilities, leadership development initiatives, and professional growth opportunities for Transportation Safety & Compliance personnel.
  • Ensure consistency of transportation safety, compliance, and driver development programs across all operating companies and geographic regions.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging transportation safety trends, technologies, and regulatory changes impacting driver safety.



Transportation Compliance Leadership



  • Provide strategic oversight and governance of the Company's Transportation Compliance organization, ensuring consistent execution of regulatory programs across all operating regions.
  • Establish enterprise compliance standards, audit protocols, operational controls, and performance expectations.
  • Ensure organizational readiness for FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, EPA, HAZMAT, and all applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
  • Review compliance trends, audit findings, regulatory changes, and corrective action plans to proactively reduce organizational risk.
  • Provide executive oversight of Driver Qualification, Hours of Service, permitting, incident reporting, and transportation compliance programs through the Director of Transportation Compliance Programs.


Safety Programs:



  • Develop and maintain enterprise transportation safety policies, standards, and best practices.
  • Lead behavioral-based transportation safety initiatives and enterprise safety campaigns.
  • Establish measurable safety goals and performance metrics that reduce vehicle incidents and improve driver performance.
  • Oversee transportation incident investigations involving vehicle accidents, injuries, cargo spills, product contamination events, and other significant transportation events.
  • Ensure root cause analyses are completed and corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  • Partner with Legal, Risk Management, and Insurance representatives regarding transportation-related claims, litigation, and regulatory matters.


Incident Management & Risk Reduction



  • Lead investigations of vehicle accidents, injuries, cargo spills, product contamination events, and transportation-related incidents.
  • Perform root cause analyses and identify systemic corrective actions.
  • Develop preventive strategies to reduce repeat events and improve organizational performance.
  • Partner with Legal, Risk Management, and Insurance representatives during transportation-related investigations and litigation support.



Driver Program & Development:



  • Develop and oversee enterprise transportation training strategies for commercial and non-commercial drivers.
  • Provide executive oversight of the Company's Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Program.
  • Establish standardized onboarding, coaching, refresher training, and remedial driver development programs.
  • Ensure transportation training programs remain aligned with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Oversee the Driver Training Manager and ensure consistent delivery of driver education and development programs throughout the organization.



Driver Performance, Recognition & Telematics



  • Contribute to enterprise telematics strategy, driver performance analytics, and behavioral monitoring programs.
  • Coordinate with the HR team and develop enterprise driver scorecards, performance metrics that showcase safe and professional driving behaviors.
  • Provide executive oversight of the Company's Driver Performance & Recognition Program, ensuring incentive criteria align with organizational safety objectives, regulatory compliance, and operational performance.
  • Utilize telematics, inspections, incidents, and operational performance data to identify trends, recognize high-performing drivers, and support targeted coaching initiatives.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • 10+ years of demonstrated experience in safety and management roles, preferably within the transportation or logistics industry.
  • Demonstrated experience leading transportation safety and compliance across multiple locations, states, or operating companies within a geographically dispersed organization.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing enterprise-wide driver training programs across multiple locations or operating companies.
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizational change initiatives and driving adoption of enterprise safety and compliance standards across diverse operating environments.
  • Experience managing FMCSA audits, DOT investigations, compliance reviews, and CSA intervention strategies.
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing multi-level leadership teams, including directors, managers, and supervisors.
  • Strong knowledge of HAZMAT operations & regulatory requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and MSHA regulations as they pertain to Fleet Operations.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret and apply safety regulations effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of interacting effectively with senior leadership, supervisors, and associates at all levels.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Confidence and social aptitude to carry out executive-level responsibilities and represent the company in high-stakes situations.



Other Requirements:



  • Ability to travel as needed to support business operations and transportation safety objectives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word programs.
  • Experience in the fuel transportation industry is preferred but not required.



Preferred Education & Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in safety management, transportation, logistics or 15 years+ of progressive transportation safety and/or driver training experience.

Education & Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in safety management, transportation, logistics or 15 years+ of progressive transportation safety and/or driver training experience.
