Registered Nurse - Perianesthesia

Our Perianesthesia Department includes a 22-bed PACU, 11-bed pre-operative unit, and 4-bed Procedural Annex supporting a variety of surgical and procedural services. We are a high-acuity academic medical center caring for 60+ surgical and procedural patients daily.

Our team provides care for a diverse surgical population including orthopedic spine, neurosurgery, transplant, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, general surgery, urology, and interventional procedures. We care for medically complex patients requiring close monitoring, interdisciplinary collaboration, and individualized care throughout the perioperative experience.


  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult patients recovering from anesthesia in a high-acuity PACU and procedural environment.
  • Perform ongoing patient assessment, monitoring, and stabilization of post-operative and procedural patients, including those requiring advanced monitoring and complex care coordination.
  • Assess and manage airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and pain management needs during the immediate post-anesthesia phase.
  • Safely administer medications, blood products, and therapeutic interventions while monitoring complications and changes in patient condition.
  • Collaborate closely with anesthesia, surgery, procedural teams, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, ICU, and inpatient units to support safe transitions of care.
  • Recognize and escalate changes in patient condition, responding effectively to urgent and emergent situations.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding post-operative recovery, discharge expectations, medications, and follow-up care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical record documentation
  • Serve as a resource and team member in a collaborative environment that values communication and patient-centered care.

Required Qualifications:

  • One year of recent adult RN experience (within the past 5 years) in a high-acuity, high volume, inpatient, surgical Pre-Op/PACU setting.

  • Two (2) years of full-time adult ICU experience within the past 5 years

  • Requires On-Call commitment

  • Knowledge of airway management, anesthesia recovery, and pain management
  • Must be able to bend, pull and push up to 20lbs.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPAN or CCRN certification
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Current healthcare provider CPR certification
  • Current healthcare provider ACLS certification
  • Current healthcare provider PALS certification

Salary Information


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
