Position Summary Provides technical authority, planning, execution, oversight, and approval of System Safety and Reliability work products across AAG development programs' life cycles. Researches and carries out complex systems safety & reliability assessments methodologies, incorporating new/emerging methodologies. Contributes to, and has responsibility for, key practices and standards in the development of systems safety & reliability deliverables with broad product, technology, customer, and strategic business impact. Develops and recommends safety/risk decisions that are evidence-based and traceable to government regulations and industry standards. May have customer interface to clarify and resolve specific technical issues. Responsibilities
- Defines safety and reliability approaches on AAG development programs, tailoring applicable standards (e.g., SAE ARP4761, MIL-STD-882E, MIL-HDBK-217F) for program/contract and compliance certification basis. Develops and owns the system safety program plan and reliability plan on AAG development programs. Supports requirements development and management, including elicitation, analysis, validation, and communication of customer needs/expectations on aspects concerning system safety and reliability; provides assessments supporting correct decomposition of customer requirements into product, component, and interface requirements.
- Provides expert technical advice and recommendations, supports internal and customer design reviews as a subject matter expert, and proposes methodologies for problem-solving and analyses relating to system safety and reliability on complex system architectures and customer issues. Drives root cause and corrective action investigations to closure.
- Makes technical proposals and presentations to various internal and customer groups to influence business decisions. Maintains and takes steps to protect company intellectual property.
- Plans and leads system safety/hazard analysis activities, including PSSAs/SSAs, FHAs, FTAs, FMEAs /DFMEA, CCAs, interface hazard analyses, software safety analyses, human factors/operational safety assessments. Establishes and maintains hazard logs. Assigns severity and probability to derive risk levels supported by robust rationale.
- Develops reliability predictions, reliability block diagrams, availability/maintainability assessments, reliability allocations and apportionment, derating/parts stress, and load/environment validation. Prepares and reviews product reliability and qualification test procedures (e.g., HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing), HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening), Environmental Testing, etc.).
- Investigates, researches, and operationalizes new methodologies in safety and reliability to improve cost and performance by applying advanced engineering design methods, theories, and research techniques. Develops and implements Reliability & Safety processes for the business to improve the development process.
- Maintains advanced level of professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing technical publications, benchmarking best practices, and/or participating in professional associations.
- Acts as consultant to management on technical and project-related matters. Serves as a functional expert. Identifies mentoring and development needs; serves as a mentor for other employees.
Qualifications
Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Engineering; advanced degree (MS/PhD) preferred Deep expertise in system safety & reliability; demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through 12+ years of related experience; specific experience in motion control systems strongly preferred Comprehensive, advanced knowledge of product or domain engineering theories, principles, industry practices, concepts, techniques, government regulations, and policies, including SAE ARP4761, SAE ARP4754, MIL-STD-882E, RTCA DO-178, RTCA DO-254, RTCA DO-160, ISO-9000/9001, MIL-STD-810, MIL-HDBK-217F, MIL-HDBK-217 Plus, MIL-HDBK-472, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-STD-1629. Demonstrated ability to research, develop, and integrate new technologies & methodologies. Experience setting up a System Safety framework for a product or program. Strong written and verbal communication skills and conceptual acuity to establish and maintain technical alignment across all stakeholders, and to influence varied audiences to gain support or resolve issues. Makes effective presentations on complex topics to top management, customers, and/or other key stakeholders. Ability to apply and integrate knowledge of other related engineering areas or experts to own area of expertise Proficiency with specialized data analysis software and engineering design tools Ability to establish and track performance to goals and objectives to complete complex or major projects and provide direction to the team at project milestones Ability to respond to significant inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or other internal teams
