Registered Nurse - PACU

Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.

The Perianesthesia Care Units at Mt Zion include the Pre-operative (prep), Post-Anesthesia Care Units (PACU), and the 23-Hr Short Stay Unit (overnight observation unit). The team of nurses provides dynamic, compassionate care to a wide range of surgical patients, including adults and adolescents (ages 13 and up), in the ambulatory care setting.

In preparing patients for surgery, we ensure their readiness and provide preoperative teaching for patients and their families. The priority postoperatively is to physiologically stabilize patients, provide innovative pain management strategies, and integrate family-centered care. An interdisciplinary team of nurses, surgeons, specialty physicians, anesthesiologists, and respiratory therapists works to initiate the recovery from surgery.

Nurses collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and other members of the interdisciplinary team. In addition to the Patient Care Manager and other Assistant Unit managers within the perioperative areas to continuously improve patient safety, efficiency and patient satisfaction.

The 23-Hour Short Stay unit provides quality care and patient satisfaction for those patients who require outpatient extended care. This modality of service offers greater flexibility for various procedures and enhances operational efficiency and clinical excellence in the ambulatory surgery center. The nurses in this unit collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to provide an integrated, family-centered patient care experience.

Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors. Carries out legal responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act. Accountable to the NURSE SVC SUPV 2 for overall work performance.

Required Qualifications:

• Two years of Critical Care experience as an RN
• Recent PACU experience in an inpatient setting
• Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
• Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
• Active American Heart Association ACLS Certification
• Active American Heart Association PALS Certification
• Requires an On-Call commitment
• Knowledge of airway management, anesthesia recovery, and pain management

• The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

Preferred Qualifications:

• BSN

License/Certifications:
