The Executive Director (ED) of the Medica Foundation provides leadership and direction to advance the Foundation's mission, vision, and values. This position co-reports to the Foundation Board Chair and CLO, while working closely with executive leadership. The Director, Foundation is responsible for strategy, governance, and operations, while leading partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. This position requires strong expertise in Minnesota's philanthropic, nonprofit, and health care ecosystem, as well as a demonstrated commitment to Trust-based Philanthropy and advancing health across populations. Perform other duties assigned.

Key Accountabilities



  • Strategic Leadership

    • Develop and execute the Foundation's vision, strategy, giving guidelines, and priorities in alignment with its mission and values
    • Enhance the Medica Foundation's reputation as a responsible public charitable foundation, as well as Medica's responsibility as a nonprofit health plan
    • Challenge the status quo by assessing emerging health trends and adjacent social issues for opportunities relevant to the Foundation's focus areas
    • Ensure programs drive mission-aligned impact and an evaluation framework that breeds confidence with Board, executive leadership and key stakeholders
    • Champion the best practices of Trust-based Philanthropy and the Minnesota Council on Foundations Principles for Philanthropy
    • Cultivate partnerships with nonprofits, public-sector entities, and other stakeholders to leverage impact while driving scalable opportunities to promote health improvement for the communities Medica serves


  • Stakeholder Engagement

    • Serve as the Foundation's primary spokesperson across relevant stakeholders, including partners, community leaders, media, and philanthropic networks
    • Collaborate with Medica teams (e.g. Public Affairs, Markets, Human Resources, Marketing/Experience, Clinical Quality) to integrate philanthropy, add value to appropriate Medica initiatives and support the company's mission
    • Collaborate with Human Resources to foster employee engagement in volunteerism, giving campaigns, employee resource groups and social impact programs
    • Actively engage with and support philanthropic and community organizations (e.g. Minnesota Council on Foundations, Grantmakers in Health)


  • Fiscal Management

    • Partner with the Board and Finance Department to ensure aligned investment strategies for Medica Foundation's assets, including mission-aligned impact investing
    • Collaborate with the Finance Department on budget development and financial management
    • Oversee grantmaking processes with transparency and accountability
    • Maintain fiscal responsibility to ensure Foundation resources are leveraged consistent with the highest ethical and legal standards


  • Governance & Operations

    • Collaborate with the Foundation Board to ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and fiduciary requirements
    • Manage internal policies, reporting systems, and performance metrics that promote transparency and a culture of accountability
    • Identify opportunities to continue to strengthen the Foundation and build necessary capacity to further the Foundation's mission and community impact


  • Team Leadership

    • Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing staff team
    • Foster a transparent, inclusive, mission-driven culture that values collaboration, curiosity, learning, and innovation
    • Recruit, mentor, and support a high-performing grant review council




Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus 10 years of work experience


Preferred Qualifications



  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in philanthropy, nonprofit, social responsibility or related fields.
  • Demonstrated deep knowledge of the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors, grantmaking, impact measurement, social responsibility, and community engagement.
  • Experience in governance, board relations, and financial oversight.
  • Strong track record of developing and executing philanthropic strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and supporting community-led initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social responsibility and addressing inequities.
  • Exceptional relationship building, communication, and internal/external stakeholder management.
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree, advanced degree helpful.
  • Knowledge and experience integrating and advancing the Trust-based Philanthropy framework helpful.
  • Knowledge and experience working with impact investing helpful.
  • Experience in the health/managed care fields helpful.
  • Experience working in both urban and rural markets in Minnesota helpful.
  • Familiarity or knowledge of corporate philanthropy helpful.



This position is an Office role, which requires an employee to work onsite at our Minnetonka MN office, on average, 3 days per week.

The full salary grade for this position is $130,300-$223,400. While the full salary grade is provided, the typical hiring salary range for this role is expected to be between $130,300-$195,510. Annual salary range placement will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, education, work experience, applicable certifications and/or licensure, the position's scope and responsibility, internal pay equity and external market salary data. In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for incentive plan compensation in addition to base salary.
