Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist II
Work Location: 50 Medical Park Drive, Birmingham, AL (UAB St. Vincent's East)
Assignment Duration: 3+ Months
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 11:00 AM - 7:30 PM
Position Summary:
Responsibilities are interchangeable among Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist roles. The specific work environment/department will be outlined in the requirement. The role involves determining specimen acceptability and performing both routine and complex laboratory procedures in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
Background & Context:
FMLA and short-staff coverage within the Microbiology Lab.
Key Responsibilities:
- Determine specimen acceptability based on established criteria
- Perform routine and complex lab procedures per SOPs
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot lab instrumentation
- Make technical decisions and resolve testing issues
- Prepare, test, and evaluate reagents and controls
- Report accurate and timely test results
- Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control
- Maintain inventory of testing supplies
- Assist with specimen processing as needed
- Ensure a safe work environment and proper use of PPE
- Handle sample processing, testing, setup, maintenance, documentation, and QC
- Perform microbiology-specific tasks (reading plates, susceptibilities, general lab work)
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or equivalent (as per CLIA/state requirements)
- 2-4 years of clinical laboratory testing experience required
- State Medical Technologist license (if required per state)
- ASCP or AMT certification (preferred/required as per role)
- Microbiology experience required
- Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Proficiency with computers; experience with laboratory information systems is a plus
- Must pass a standardized color vision screening
- Flexibility to work overtime or alternate shifts as needed
