Job Summary

Direct management, direction, and administration of Clinical Applications Professionals within the Laboratory and Infection Information Management Systems team, including resources supporting Digital Pathology and related clinical imaging technologies. This role is responsible for both the strategic direction and operational oversight of a complex portfolio of clinical applications supporting laboratory, pathology, infection prevention, and digital pathology workflows, including Epic and integrated third-party systems.

Analyzes and resolves complex problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts, and resource management), and demonstrates advanced subject matter expertise in clinical laboratory, pathology, and infection prevention workflows and technologies. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate actions while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

Manages subordinate staff to ensure accountability and stewardship of operational, financial, and human resources. Oversees daily operational activities, including prioritization of work, support coverage, and 24x7 production support readiness, ensuring high availability and reliability of clinical systems.

Provides leadership and oversight for the development, implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of clinical applications and digital pathology solutions. Ensures execution across all phases of system delivery, including requirements gathering, analysis and design, configuration, testing, validation, deployment, and support, with accountability for high-quality deliverables and outcomes.

Leads strategic planning efforts in partnership with clinical department administrators, cross-functional teams, and subject matter experts to define future-state solutions. Collaborates across UC Davis Health and affiliated entities to align technology strategies with clinical and operational goals and ensure scalable, interoperable solutions.

Responsible for performance management, staff development, and team engagement, fostering a collaborative, cross-trained team model to ensure resiliency and reduce single points of failure.

Establishes and maintains strong relationships with laboratory, pathology, infection prevention, and other clinical and operational leadership, serving as a trusted advisor on workflow optimization, system configuration, and policy development.

Oversees development and tracking of departmental metrics, key performance indicators, and service levels, using data to drive continuous improvement and operational efficiency.

Identifies risks across projects and operational support activities and ensures development and execution of risk mitigation strategies to minimize impact to clinical operations.

Provides oversight of project planning, resource allocation, budgeting, and vendor coordination, ensuring alignment with Health System technology strategy, standards, and infrastructure requirements.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience/ training.
  • Previous supervisory experience, or demonstrated leadership of cross-functional project teams, typically 1-3 years, supporting the delivery of complex clinical system implementations across multiple departments or service lines.
  • Experience in planning and delegating work, resource management, budgeting, and operational oversight in a fast-paced, highly matrixed healthcare environment.
  • Experience supporting or implementing complex healthcare information systems in a clinical environment with an understanding of clinical workflows, systems integrations, and end-user impact on patient care and operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, or develop staff and/or project team members, fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Experience partnering with clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders to define requirements, align priorities, and support successful implementation and adoption of systems and workflows.
  • Experience managing or contributing to complex projects with multiple stakeholders, including coordinating timelines, tracking deliverables, and supporting successful execution.
  • Strong technical background with demonstrated competency in clinical imaging workflows and following areas: Strong critical-thinking, project-management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and interpret complex data and systems, to quickly identify problems and implement technical solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively train users and to successfully manage extensive cross-functional interactions between the Clinical Application team, users, related personnel and outside vendors.
  • Ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise, and specific manner and to cultivate strong commitment to quality and achievement of goals.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare information technology, clinical workflow and processes and medical terminology. Comprehensive understanding of clinical applications and integration with clinical processes and workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical application systems, including planning, design, development, testing, system integration, data integrity, security, and user support
  • Demonstrated leadership skills managing IT professionals and collaborating with clinical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess issues, identify root causes, and support development of effective solutions in complex environments.
  • Ability to balance operational responsibilities with project work, aligning efforts to departmental and organizational priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to convey highly technical information to all levels of clinical and operational users, and influence decision-making across stakeholder groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Epic clinical application certifications
  • PMP
  • Experience implementing or supporting multiple laboratory and pathology information systems, including integration with analyzers and clinical workflows; experience supporting or advancing digital pathology initiatives strongly preferred.
  • Strong project-management, and problem-solving experience, with the ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and interpret complex systems and data to quickly identify issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Experience interfacing clinical laboratory systems, analyzers and/or third-party applications, including understanding of data flow, system integration, and downstream impacts.
  • Experience supporting laboratory, pathology, blood bank, or infection prevention workflows and systems within a clinical environment.
  • Experience implementing and supporting multiple applications within a clinical information systems environment, including coordination across integrated systems, interfaces, and workflows.
  • Experience preparing and delivering meaningful analytical reports and insights to leadership, including conducting research and performing quantitative and qualitative analysis multiple data sources.
  • Ability to apply expert problem resolution skills to highly complex issues involving hardware, software, network, and integration components.
  • Expert organization and project management skills including the ability to lead a team, mentor team members, and prioritize tasks.
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and delegate clinical applications work efficiently, with strong human resources management skills and knowledge.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with the ability to create clear, concise documentation and presentations to support operational and strategic initiatives.
