| Purpose of Position |
The Advisor provides direct career development services and instructional programming to first-year students, with a focus on undecided, undeclared, and premajor populations. In addition to student-facing work, this position plays a critical role in the collection, analysis, and reporting of career-related data used to support student success, retention initiatives, and institutional decision-making.
The Advisor supports the operations of Career Services through data management, front-line student service, and coordination of key programs and events. This position works closely with Undergraduate Admissions, First-Year Programs, and the First-Year Advising Center to improve retention and reduce timetodegree for vulnerable early-career learners. |
| Primary Responsibilities |
Career Advising & Instruction
- Provide one-on-one career advising to first-year, undecided, undeclared, and pre-major students, including major exploration, career assessments, and job/internship search support.
- Deliver presentations, workshops, and course content related to career readiness and career development.
- Teach CEP 101: Career Development as assigned.
Data & Reporting
This position serves as a primary data steward for Career Services and maintains responsibility for data accuracy, reporting, and analytics.
- Gather, compile, and maintain data across multiple technology platforms to support departmental operations, strategic planning, and retention initiatives.
- Import graduate outcomes and enrollment data into Handshake, ensuring accurate and timely updates.
- Compile and analyze career fair participation metrics, student engagement data, employer activity, and First-Year programming outcomes.
- Create dashboards, data summaries, and internal reports to inform departmental decision-making, first-year initiatives, employer engagement strategies, and assessment requirements.
- Conduct data integrity and cleanup projects; audit records to ensure accuracy and consistency across systems.
- Respond to internal and external data requests, including those from division leadership, campus partners, accreditation processes, and external stakeholders.
- Identify trends and insights related to first-year career behaviors, exploratory student needs, and early engagement patterns to improve program effectiveness.
Program & Student Staff Oversight
- Lead the First-Year Peer Career Coach Program, including hiring, onboarding, training, supervising, and evaluating student employees.
- Provide ongoing coaching to ensure high-quality peer advising and data documentation.
Front-Line Service & Office Operations
- Serve as a first point of contact for Career Services by greeting visitors, answering phones, and managing the department email.
- Provide accurate information to students, faculty, employers, and families, and direct complex inquiries appropriately.
- Provide event and operational support for career fairs, employer engagement activities, workshops, and special events.
Campus Partnerships & Outreach
- Coordinate communication and support with Undergraduate Admissions, First-Year Programs, First-Year Advising Center, faculty, and student organizations.
- Promote first-year engagement, early career readiness, and connection to campus resources.

| Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred
- Minimum of one year of experience in career services, career counseling, academic advising, student affairs, HR, or related field.
- Knowledge of career development theory, exploratory student needs, and job/internship search processes.
- Experience with career and personality assessment tools (MBTI, SII, FOCUS 2 preferred but not required).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present to diverse groups.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) and comfort working with CRMs, career platforms, and reporting tools (preferred: Handshake, Qualtrics, Canvas).
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, maintain confidentiality, and use sound judgment.
- Experience supervising or coaching student employees.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to build relationships with students, faculty, employers, and partners.
