Position description

Assistant or Associate Specialist - Core Immunology Lab (CIL)

The general responsibilities for this position are to support the lab with day-to-day sample processing (mainly human blood and tissue samples), operate the flow cytometers and cell sorters for Core projects and investigators requiring assistance, perform general maintenance, QC/QA following documented SOPs, develop new SOPs and protocols as needed, troubleshoot mechanical and software issues for the flow core's instrumentation and equipment, and provide technical advice to users on experimental methods related to flow cytometry.

Further, this position will require you to assist with the management of the data and equipment, assist with new cytometry panel development projects, data analysis using flow cytometry analysis software, maintain current knowledge of best practices for flow cytometry, and provide training for the use of the flow cytometers, sorters and related software. This position will further require you to mentor and train junior staff members in the core and serve on Division committees, including but not limited to the DEM Flow Cytometry Committee.

Required Qualifications:



  • Assistant Specialist - Master's degree in biological sciences, bioinformatics, or a field related to biological or biomedical sciences or a baccalaureate degree in biological sciences, bioinformatics or a field related to biological or biomedical sciences with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Associate Specialist - Master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences, bioinformatics, or a field related to biological or biomedical sciences or five to ten years of experience in the relevant.
  • Relevant research experience with publications.
  • Demonstrated wet-laboratory experience in biomedical research.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge and research experience in cellular immunology and/or molecular biology.
  • Bioinformatics knowledge and experience with high-dimensional data processing and analysis.
  • Basic genomic assay (e.g. RNA preparation, cDNA synthesis, qPCR, library prep) and sequencing data analysis experience.
  • Experience in single cell RNA seq with 10X platform.
  • Assisting billing and financial tasks using iLab platform.
  • Assisting manuscripts and reports.
  • Assisting grant applications.
