THE POSITION

Are you experienced in diagnosing and fixing diesel and gasoline vehicles, along with construction equipment? The Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic to join our Washington County Maintenance Organization. In this important position, your knowledge will play a crucial role in prolonging the lifespan of our highway and construction machinery. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a licensed mechanic with expertise in automotive and heavy equipment, you will undertake a variety of analytical, preventative maintenance, and repair duties for a diverse fleet that encompasses construction machinery, trucks, cars, and gasoline and diesel-powered hand tools. Your responsibilities will include overhauling and repairing vehicles such as cars, trucks, and tractors, as well as maintaining equipment like sweepers and front-end loaders. You will address various repairs, including those related to shock absorbers, transmissions, and brakes, while also performing wheel balancing, alignment checks, and minor bodywork. In addition to these core tasks, you will establish a preventative maintenance program for vehicles and equipment, conduct automotive diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes, and repair engine sub-assemblies. You will also adjust systems related to cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, and air conditioning, ensuring that fuel, brake, steering, and transmission systems are properly maintained. Furthermore, you will carry out official state inspections for safety and emissions, making necessary repairs to comply with standards, conducting road tests, and completing the required inspection documentation. Utilizing diagnostic tools and procedures, you will identify equipment issues and determine the appropriate repair methods, tools, and parts required. Additionally, you will maintain and repair motorized hand tools such as chain saws and compressors, promptly reporting any missing parts or broken equipment as necessary.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission (E) removed or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
