Description
Summary: Transports patients to their inpatient bed and/or to and from other areas such as admitting, surgery, therapy or radiology in a safe and timely manner. Retrieves medical records, lab results, supplies and medications as required. Prioritizes duties to facilitate department flow. Maintains and cleans equipment. Responsibilities:
- Transports patients safely between hospital departments for procedures, testing, admissions, and discharges.
- Assists patients onto stretchers, wheelchairs, or beds and ensures safe positioning during transport.
- Communicates with nursing and clinical staff to coordinate patient transport requests.
- Ensures patient identification is verified prior to transport according to established procedures.
- Transports medical equipment, supplies, and other materials as needed.
- Monitors patient comfort and safety during transport and reports concerns to clinical staff.
- Maintains cleanliness and readiness of transport equipment including wheelchairs and stretchers.
- Follows infection control procedures and safety protocols.
- Maintains courteous and professional communication with patients, families, and staff.
- Assists with maintaining an organized and safe patient transport environment.
Requirements: Education/Skills
- High School Diploma or GED required, or
- In lieu of a High School Diploma or GED, two (2) years of relevant work experience above the minimum qualification
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in healthcare support, patient transport, customer service, or a related service role preferred.
- Ability to safely transport patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, and hospital beds.
- Knowledge of basic patient safety and handling techniques.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with patients and healthcare staff.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and patient identification protocols.
- Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in a healthcare environment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct.
