DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Systemwide Office of Civil Rights (SOCR) is composed of the Systemwide Title IX Office, Systemwide Anti-Discrimination Office, and Systemwide Disability Rights Office. SOCR provides systemwide guidance and support on issues related to protecting civil rights at UC's 10 campuses, medical centers, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and the Office of the President. We ensure uniform interpretation of the following two comprehensive systemwide policies.

  • UC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment (SVSH) Policy (Title IX)

  • UC Anti-Discrimination Policy (Title VI, Title VII, and related civil rights laws)

SOCR also provides leadership, training, education, and investigative support for UC offices responsible for protecting all civil rights.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to either the Systemwide Title IX Director, Systemwide Anti-Discrimination Director, or Systemwide Disability Rights Director, the Intern uses skills as a budding professional to plan, manage, and administer SOCR's special projects. In addition to providing day-to-day administrative support, this role collaborates with department and campus partners to plan and coordinate systemwide projects and ensure they run smoothly. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Spearheads communication and coordination with stakeholders regarding projects.

The SOCR Summer Intern is a limited-term (approximately 10 - 12 weeks), paid internship position designed for current and recently graduated undergraduate or graduate students interested in civil rights compliance, higher education policy, law, public administration, or related fields. SOCR will consider current law students interested in higher education policy. The Intern will be assigned to one of three tracks:

  • Title IX / SVSH Track

  • Title VI, Title VII / Anti-Discrimination Track

  • Disability Rights Track

While assignments may vary by track, interns will gain exposure to systemwide policy implementation, training development, data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and civil rights compliance operations in a large public university system.

This position reports to a designated SOCR manager and works closely with Systemwide Title IX Officers (TIXOs), Local Implementation Officers (LIOs), investigators, training staff, and policy professionals.

Responsibilities

70% Policy Support

  • Assist SOCR with revisions to and coordination of stakeholder input for two large-scale policy revision processes.

  • Conduct legal and policy research related to Title IX, Title VI, Title VII, ADA, and California civil rights laws.

  • Assist in reviewing and summarizing campus implementation practices.

  • Support development of policy guidance documents, FAQs, and toolkits.

  • Prepare briefing memos and research summaries for SOCR leadership.

10% Training and Education Support

  • Assists with day-to-day office operations.

  • Assist in drafting or revising training materials (eLearning, slide decks, facilitator guides).

  • Support development of educational resources for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Conduct comparative research on national best practices in civil rights compliance.

  • Assist in tracking training completion metrics and analyzing trends.

10% Program and Operational Support

  • Assist with preparation for systemwide meetings, webinars, and working groups.

  • Take notes during internal meetings and summarize action items.

  • Support content updates for SOCR websites and shared resources.

  • Assist in data organization and reporting projects.

10% Special Projects

  • Complete projects related to policy revisions and present the outcomes of those projects to SOCR leadership at the conclusion of the internship.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as an upper-division undergraduate or graduate student at a University of California campus, including students who will graduate in May 2026.

  • Interested in civil rights compliance, higher education policy, law, public administration, or related fields. Law students who are interested in higher education policy will be considered.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated research and analytical ability.

  • Ability to read and analyze complex policy.

  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in political science, public policy, sociology, legal studies, or related field.

  • Interest in civil rights, public policy, compliance, higher education administration, or law.

  • Experience with data analysis, survey tools, or training development.

  • Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to engage respectfully with diverse perspectives.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • This position may involve exposure to sensitive subject matter, including reports of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct. Interns are not responsible for handling complaints but must demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and neutrality.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The person hired will be required report on-site at the UC Office of the President (UCOP) located in Oakland, CA on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, subject to change. The person hired must reside in California.
