The VP of Strategy and Chief of Staff for Individual and Family Plans (IFP) will be a direct report to the CEO and serve as a critical member of the IFP leadership team. This leader will be a trusted voice and advisor to help the CEO determine, articulate, and execute the team's vision, mission, strategies, and OKRs within the chief of staff, growth and strategy elements of the role. The VP will also play a significant role in business growth and market expansion as well as other strategic initiatives as assigned. This leader will have a small direct team while influencing the broader leadership team.

In conjunction with the CEO and senior leadership team, the VP of Strategic Initiatives owns the 5-year strategy, growth agenda, day to day business agenda and cadence and will have accountability for execution of the growth agenda. In this role, the selected leader will be accountable for taking the lead in developing executive presentations, business plans and managing projects to execution that will require collaborative work across the IFP leadership team, broader UnitedHealthcare, Optum and UnitedHealth Group. He/she will act as a liaison for matters of importance, assuming responsibility for filtering and prioritizing projects, responding to requests, and leading and executing strategic initiatives, as directed by the CEO. In all capacities, this role works collaboratively with other Chiefs of Staff across the enterprise. This role requires forward strategic thinking, with the ability to anticipate needs and shifts in our growth agenda and strategy.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage monthly/quarterly/annual/ad hoc executive reporting with close attention to detail for accuracy and insight, consolidating information as needed to reflect the holistic view across business
  • Develop, manage and/or delegate the tracking of progress against plans, identifying any deviations and suggestions to remediate
  • Consult on and prepare executive level presentations (both internal and external)
  • Support and create executive communications, talking points, etc. Coordinate with corporate communications as needed
  • Develop leadership team operating model and meeting cadence; support content for monthly business reviews and monthly management meetings - thinking through different audiences and communication needs
  • Able to take raw data and information from multiple sources to create a visually appealing, consolidated story, demonstrating consistent exceptional writing skills
  • Anticipate, manage preparation for, and when appropriate, facilitate meetings and events
  • Prepare and coordinate resources and materials for critical meetings
  • Manage and drive day to day decisions in support of the teams' priorities and initiatives including strategic projects, state expansions and growth-related implementations
  • Work closely with entire leadership team to ensure pulse on critical priorities, focus areas and business issues / risks
  • Develop integrated annual plans in support of the annual UHG business planning cycle, goal development and other enterprise planning processes
  • Establish, cultivate, and maintain collaborative working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders with a focus on resolving as many questions and issues as possible
  • Conduct data analysis designed to guide strategies to be more intelligent about how we approach the market
  • Translate highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences
  • Strategic decision-making strengths coupled with strong tactical skills to support execution of CEOs priorities and initiatives
  • Demonstrates executive presence and interacts with leadership to successfully communicate messaging, priorities and the plan or approach to delivery
  • Organized and resourceful in problem solving with proven organization and execution skills
  • Deep understanding of the enterprise and cross-lines of business structure
  • Resilient and persistent in finding answers as needed, often with a short turnaround time

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of health industry experience
  • 3+ years of experience in leadership roles
  • Experience in working with UHG executive leadership, with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and convey complex topics
  • Experience handling highly confidential or sensitive information in a professional and discreet manner
  • High proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • History of quickly gaining credibility, partnering with, and influencing business, operations and technology leaders
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously (and shift back and forth effectively among activities) to produce positive results in a dynamic environment prioritizing and managing from development to submission; able to manage competing and conflicting priorities, ambiguity, and short deadlines
  • Proven communicator; capable of effectively presenting ideas and selling concepts and tactics; excellent writer, proven ability to communicate effectively with executive-levels; ability to quickly understand needs and act on those needs; ability to conceptualize and effectuate change management and "out-of-the-box" thinking
  • Proven ability to collaborate and integrate multiple perspectives, yet are willing and able to be decisive in service of a strategic vision
  • Proven cross-functional influence and well-developed relationship building skills, willing to take a leadership role driving initiatives, working across organizations and structuring approaches to new opportunities (within and across geographically dispersed teams)
  • Demonstrated leadership; strong leader and motivator with the ability to mentor talent within the organization; able to provide work direction; able to attract and retain top talent

Preferred Qualification:

  • 4+ years of UnitedHealth Group experience
  • UHC market group experience
  • Demonstrated excellent problem solving, planning and decision-making skills; accurately scopes out projects, sets objectives and goals, develops schedules and resource assignments, measures performance against goals, and evaluates results
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with ambiguity - can effectively cope with change, can shift gears comfortably, can decide and act without having the total picture, comfortably handles risk and uncertainty in a manner consistent with UnitedHealth Group's core values
  • Demonstrated passion to create diverse and inclusive teams

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $159,300 to $273,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
