What to Expect

Regulatory product compliance is a critical business function and a rapidly expanding sector. This role facilitates global market access for our charging and energy storage products by navigating evolving local, national, and international codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., IEC, UL, NEC).

The Tesla Energy Compliance team seeks a Laboratory Associate Manager to lead our specialist abuse and validation testing laboratory - a highly regulated, critical-path function ensuring product safety and performance worldwide. You'll manage the end-to-end test lifecycle, driving operational excellence while fostering a high-performing team passionate about innovation and safety.


What You'll Do
  • Team Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of 10-20 technicians/engineers; conduct performance reviews, training, and succession planning
  • Test Operations: Oversee planning, execution, reporting, and analysis of abuse, safety, and validation tests; ensure 100% traceability, data integrity, and compliance with ISO 17025 and regulatory standards
  • Resource & Infrastructure Management: Procure, calibrate, and maintain specialized test equipment (e.g., Data recording, transducers, high-voltage rigs); manage lab layout, upgrades, and capacity scaling geared towards highly specialized testing
  • EHS & Risk Management: Champion Environmental Health & Safety protocols; lead incident investigations, risk assessments, and mitigation for high-hazard testing (e.g., arc flash, thermal runaway)
  • Quality & Continuous Improvement: Implement QA/QC processes, root-cause analysis (e.g., 8D, FMEA), and KPIs; drive laboratory accreditation and efficiency gains
  • Budget & Oversight: Manage annual budget; negotiate with suppliers, external laboratories and emergency services
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with R&D, product engineering, program managers, first responders, and external regulatory agencies such Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) to align test planning, program timelines & project status, and proactively seek to resolve issues

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelors or Equivalent Experience in electrical/mechanical engineering or related field; 5+ years managing testing labs in energy, automotive, or high-tech sectors
  • Proven track record in regulated testing (e.g., UL 9540, IEC 62133) and the associated test equipment
  • Expertise in lab automation/tools (e.g., LabVIEW, Python scripting)
  • Strong leadership, project management (e.g., Agile/PMI), and communication skills
  • Experienced in an unpredictable (fault testing) environment with high voltage / high current / high energy products
  • Experience working with external regulatory agencies
  • EHS / LEAN Practitioner
  • Developed and implemented ISO 17025 / ISO 9001 procedures
