Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Assistant Director of New Student Transitions, the Graduate Assistant for New Student Communications plays a key role in shaping how UNC Greensboro communicates with incoming students. This position offers hands-on marketing and communications experience, supporting multi-channel campaigns, social media strategy, graphic design, and campus-wide initiatives that welcome and support new students.
This assistantship is ideal for graduate students interested in marketing, communications, branding, social media strategy, or higher education marketing, and provides opportunities to build a professional portfolio while collaborating with campus partners.
RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):
Marketing & Communications Strategy

  • Serve as a primary communications support for Your First Year (YFY) initiatives
  • Support the planning and execution of integrated marketing campaigns for NST&FYE programs
  • Collaborate with campus partners to ensure consistent messaging and branding


Social Media Management & Content Creation

  • Manage and execute social media content for YFY and NST&FYE, primarily on Instagram
  • Coordinate a social media request process for internal staff and campus partners
  • Schedule and publish content using Meta and Linktree
  • Provide live Instagram Story coverage for major events
  • Monitor and respond to student inquiries via Instagram direct messages
  • Support university-wide campaigns such as Rawkin' Welcome Weeks, National Transfer Student Week, Homecoming, and other initiatives

Email Marketing & Digital Communications

  • Coordinate and produce the First Year Connect monthly e-newsletter
  • Collect content from campus partners and manage distribution lists
  • Write copy, design visuals, and assist with long-term newsletter planning

Graphic Design & Brand Management

  • Create branded graphics and marketing materials for programs including SOAR, Your First Year, NAV1GATE, Rawkin' Welcome Weeks, and the YFY Success Planner
  • Apply and uphold UNC Greensboro brand guidelines across all communications
  • Provide guidance and training to NST&FYE staff on brand standards and Canva best practices

SOAR & Orientation Communications

  • Design and execute SOAR and SOS social media campaigns
  • Create SOAR presentation templates and marketing materials in Canva
  • Assist with development of the SOAR Resource Guide and "Before You SOAR" video series
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support orientation communications

Special Projects & Event Support

  • Support planning and marketing efforts for Rawkin' Welcome Weeks
  • Support the NAV1GATE New Student Convocation planning committee
  • Assist with major NST&FYE events, including day-of execution
  • Represent NST&FYE at Student Success and university-wide events
  • Support additional communications initiatives, including texting campaigns, email communications, and mobile app content
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Admission to a graduate program at UNC Greensboro (required)
  2. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  3. Demonstrated interest or experience in marketing, communications, or social media
  4. Strong visual design skills and attention to detail (graphic design experience preferred but not required)
  5. Experience with platforms such as Canva, Instagram, Meta, Emma, or Microsoft Suite preferred

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. 9-month contract beginning August 2026
  2. 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters
  3. $15,000 stipend paid in 10 installments
  4. Preference given to candidates available for optional summer employment (May-July)
  5. Professional development funding may be available
  6. Evening and weekend hours required during peak programming periods
  7. Graduate Assistants receive student holidays, with some required flexibility during breaks

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:

  • Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
  • Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
  • Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
  • Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
