The Opportunity

The Director, Data Product Owner is responsible for development, management and adoption of robust Data products across Genentech, in which this role will shape and implement the evolving data strategy, as it relates to management and usage of customer data across different functions including Commercial, Medical Affairs & Govt. Affairs. As a subject matter expert, the individual will work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements and recommend appropriate solutions. This person will be required to forge strong relationships with stakeholders & partners to inform, gain alignment, unlock & solve complex business challenges, and influence the data product roadmap. This person will closely work with a host of internal partners, including affiliate business team, compliance and regional IT, as well as external data vendors.

  • Strategic Vision & Roadmap: Define and communicate a value-driven data product vision and strategy that aligns with Genentech's organizational goals, digital transformation, and customer-centricity while staying ahead of industry trends.

  • End-to-End Product Lifecycle: Manage the data product lifecycle from conception to optimization, including maintaining backlogs, prioritizing use cases, and monitoring performance metrics to ensure consistent business value.

  • Stakeholder Liaison & Advocacy: Act as the primary bridge between business leaders, technical teams, and executive stakeholders to synthesize complex needs into actionable data requirements and foster trust in data solutions.

  • Data Governance & Standards: Establish and enforce rigorous frameworks for data quality, metadata management, and security, ensuring full compliance with highly regulated standards such as HIPAA and GDPR.

  • Technical Leadership & Architecture: Guide cross-functional teams in adhering to modern architectural principles-specifically Data Mesh and Data Fabric-to ensure scalable, production-ready, and seamless system integrations.

  • People Management & Culture: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing product team, overseeing inclusive hiring, resource allocation, and performance management to foster a culture of innovation and accountability.

  • Collaborative Impact: Partner with engineers, IT, and vendors to drive best practices across the enterprise, contributing to Roche's broader analytics initiatives and providing training to business partners.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Technology, Operations, Marketing, Data Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 8 years of combined experience in data-product management, data-based management, key pharmaceutical/biotechnology customer data assets like HCP/HCO/MCO mastering, Hierarchy and Affiliation management or equivalent experience.

  • Domain Expertise in MDM: Proven expertise in Master Data Management (MDM) and its integration with industry-standard platforms such as Veeva CRM, marketing automation tools, and cloud data platforms, including experience managing specialized customer data vendors.

  • Strategic Product Leadership: Demonstrated ability to own the full product lifecycle, from roadmap creation and budget management to tactical execution and impact measurement, using data-driven insights to monitor system health and product usage.

  • Stakeholder & Regulatory Navigation: Exceptional communication skills with a track record of influencing cross-functional leaders and partnering with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy teams to ensure data products meet strict healthcare regulatory and governance standards.

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA or related graduate-level qualification).

  • Work experience in other functions within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry, e.g., commercial operations, field sales or sales management, field sales operations, field account management, product marketing, market planning, strategic planning, etc.

  • Knowledge of MDM solutions like Reltio, Informatica MDM; pharma CRM solutions like Salesforce, OCE, Veeva CRM; cloud platforms like AWS, Hadoop.

  • Proven success in managing large-scale, complex projects requiring strategic planning and operational execution.

  • Experience working with Pharmaceutical Commercial data like sales, specialty pharmacy, claims and Digital/marketing.

  • Expertise in driving product enhancements based on measurement and optimization insights.

  • Ability to innovate and foster experimentation to improve product capabilities.

  • Advanced knowledge of workflow tools, automation systems, and compliance frameworks.

  • Strong problem-solving and adaptability to navigate ambiguous or evolving environments.

  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing, coaching, and developing talent (direct or indirect reports), while effectively aligning resources and budgets to meet or exceed business objectives.

This position is based in South San Francisco, CA and offers a hybrid schedule working from the office 3 days per week.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $177,100 - $328,900. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position is eligible to earn incentive compensation that is calculated and paid in accordance with the applicable Incentive Compensation Plan for the role. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
