Department Information

The Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB) was founded in 1995, opening the doors of the Petit Biotechnology Building in 1999, and since that time, it has served as a catalyst for innovative bioengineering and bioscience research (https://research.gatech.edu/bio). The Molecular Evolution Core Laboratory is housed within IBB (https://research.gatech.edu/bio/research/core-facilities).

Job Summary

Support the technologist, unit supervisor, ordering providers, and patients in the acquisition, performance, and reporting of results on samples and tests required for each patient. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: Supervisor of Laboratory and Radiologic Services, Physicians, SHS staff, and students. This position will typically advise and counsel: same as above. This position will supervise: None.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Check in patients for laboratory and radiographic procedures

Job Duty 2 -
Review appropriateness of test orders; instruct patients in specimen collection; perform blood collection using various techniques; process specimens

Job Duty 3 -
Perform test procedures in the assigned area and other areas as needed. Provide technical leadership in designated area(s).

Job Duty 4 -
Perform quality assurance activities that include quality control, proficiency testing, equipment maintenance, and troubleshooting. Formulate plans for performance improvement activities.

Job Duty 5 -
Prepare x-ray orders to be entered/enter orders to be performed by Radiology Technologists. Log quality assurance data, file X-ray reports/distribute radiological and laboratory reports to the clinic.

Job Duty 6 -
Provide evidence of professional development; demonstrate competence in performance improvement principles. Contribute to the SHS Service Culture.

Job Duty 7 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Two-year Technical School or two-year Associate's Degree leading to certification as a nationally and state-certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or equivalent combination of education and experience

Other Required Qualifications
Overnight travel required for project delivery; flexibility in on-site daily service delivery hours, degree in Biology with eligibility for certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (due to client shift schedules, project requirements).

Required Experience
Six months post-graduate

  • Bachelors Degree in Biology / Molecular Biology / Biochemistry / Medical Lab Science

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience
  • Strong bench skills: pipetting accuracy, careful technique, attention to detail
  • Experience in a lab setting (clinical, diagnostic, or research) with one or more of the following: qPCR, ELISA, Sanger sequencing, and/or capillary electrophoresis/fragment analysis
  • Comfortable following SOPs and producing clean, complete records

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
Computer skills to include Microsoft Office Suite and email. Must work effectively as a team member in a diverse or multidisciplinary group and demonstrate an openness to others. Minimum of three months working knowledge with at least one Laboratory Information System (LIS).
