We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to oversee daily operations of our construction materials and geotechnical testing laboratory. This role is responsible for managing lab staff, ensuring testing is performed accurately and on schedule, maintaining compliance with applicable standards (ASTM/AASHTO/FDOT), and supporting project teams with reporting, quality control, and client service.



Responsibilities

    Manage day-to-day laboratory operations for materials and soils testing.
  • Supervise lab technicians and ensure proper training, performance, and safety compliance.
  • Schedule and coordinate testing priorities based on project deadlines and workload.
  • Ensure all testing follows applicable ASTM / AASHTO / FDOT (or local) requirements.
  • Review and verify test data for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
  • Maintain and enforce laboratory quality control procedures and internal check systems.
  • Oversee sample intake, tracking, storage, and disposal procedures.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained, calibrated, and documented per QA/QC requirements.
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies, consumables, and order materials as needed.
  • Assist with preparation and review of lab reports, including supporting calculations.
  • Communicate with project managers, field staff, and clients regarding test status and results.
  • Support audits and certifications (e.g., AASHTO/CMEC).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional lab environment.

Testing Scope (Typical)

Geotechnical / Soil Testing:

  • Moisture content (ASTM D2216)
  • Atterberg limits (ASTM D4318)
  • Proctor compaction (ASTM D698 / D1557)
  • Soil classification (USCS)
  • CBR/LBR (ASTM D1883/D3666)
  • Sieve analysis (ASTM D6913 / D7928)
  • Density/unit weight calculations and general soil lab procedures

Concrete / Construction Materials Testing:

  • Concrete cylinder compressive strength (ASTM C39)
  • Making & curing cylinders (ASTM C31)
  • Slump (ASTM C143)
  • Air content (ASTM C231 / C173)
  • Unit weight / yield (ASTM C138)
  • Modulus of elasticity (ASTM C469) (if applicable)


Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in a construction materials / geotechnical testing lab (preferred).
  • Prior leadership experience (lead tech, supervisor, or manager) strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of ASTM/AASHTO/FDOT testing procedures and reporting requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with strong organization.
  • Comfortable using computers and reporting software (Excel required).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with field and project management teams.

Preferred Certifications (a plus)

  • ACI Field Testing Technician Grade I
  • NICET (Construction Materials Testing)
  • FDOT CTQP (if in Florida)
  • OSHA safety training
