About our group:

The Seagate Research Group (SRG) advances next-generation technologies and explores device concepts that shape the global datasphere. Our work directly informs Seagate's long-term product roadmaps and enables breakthrough innovations that leverage the company's deep technical expertise. The newly formed Data Creation and Networking Group focuses on developing a deep understanding of, and solving challenges in photonics, robotics, and biochemistry.

We are seeking a highly accomplished technology leader at the Senior Director level with proven experience leading multidisciplinary teams.

About the role - you will:

  • Discover, design, and prototype photonics-enabled solutions for data storage and adjacent applications.
  • Develop robotics applications that leverage Seagate's expertise in mechanics, sensing, and storage technologies.
  • Create biochemistry automation hardware (Lab-on-a-Chip) and developing novel biochemistry applications, intellectual property, and prototypes.
  • Set technical direction, build credible prototypes, drive cross-functional research, and mature concepts along the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) pathway-from early pathfinding to product sizeable architectures.


  • Lead and serve as the technical authority for a high-performing team of engineers and scientists within Seagate Research.
  • Grow and resource the team to support selected strategic projects.
  • Build strong, productive collaborations with domain experts across Seagate.
  • Manage an external research portfolio aligned with the Data Creation and Networking Technology vector.
  • Apply AI technologies to accelerate research and develop research technologies that support AI and emerging applications.
  • Identify, frame, and prioritize opportunities in photonics, robotics, and biochemistry across data storage and adjacent domains.
  • Develop and validate proof-of-concept prototypes.
  • Guide internal researchers and external partners; publish results, file patents, and represent Seagate in technical and industry forums.
  • Mentor engineers, establish best practices, and foster a culture of scientific rigor, innovation, and rapid learning.

About you:

  • Systems thinker with deep, hands-on technical expertise,
  • comfortable operating across fundamental physics, device-level implementation, and system-level constraints.
  • Highly collaborative, with the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences and influence cross-functional decision-making.
  • Driven by curiosity, data, and measurable impact, and thrives in fast-paced, multi-project research environments.

Your experience includes:

  • Demonstrated expertise in integrated photonics, robotics, and AI.
  • Proven track record in prototype development and experimental characterization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a collaborative mindset and excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership in multi-disciplinary programs, external partnerships, and IP strategy.
  • Able to travel nationally and internationally.



You might also have:




  • Ph.D. in an engineering or scientific discipline with 10+ years of relevant industry and/or research experience.

Location:

Our Shakopee campus is located 25 minutes southwest of Minneapolis in a setting with a rural vibe - it overlooks a horse racing track and stables, yet it has great entertainment venues close by as well. With wide-open spaces, the campus has plenty of space for running, biking, shooting some hoops or playing volleyball over lunch. The estimated base salary range for this position is $194,438.00 - $288,745.00. The individual salary is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

The benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location.
