DESCRIPTION

The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 57 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs.

The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation - from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.

Under faculty and APP leadership, this position will supervise Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) in the inpatient and outpatient oncology setting for Cancer Services. In addition to the supervisory responsibilities outlined below, this position will provide care for the oncology patient and family, in collaboration with faculty. Clinical care responsibilities will include performing exams, ordering diagnostic and screening tests, diagnosing and treating patients, developing plans of care, accurately documenting patient medical history and care and educating and consulting with patients and families.

Supervisory responsibilities include: overseeing APPs in daily operations, ensuring adherence to ethics and quality standards in the delivery of patient care by Advanced Practice Providers; collaborating with senior management on operational and performance issues and the development of new plans and programs to improve and integrate APP functions and systems across specialties, departments and throughout the medical center, including the development and implementation of APP Best Practice Models; and ensuring appropriate professional development opportunities are developed and implemented.

Supervises APPs responsible for patient evaluation, testing, diagnosis, plans of care, and treatment within a clinical department or specialty practice area. As a supervisor, receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by which to attain them.

Depending on the credentials of the selected candidate, this position will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.

  • NP: Current California RN license, Nurse Practitioner license, and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification.

  • PA: Current California Physician Assistant (PA) license and current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • Current ART certification, or BLS and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • A minimum three (3) years of recent work experience as a licensed NP or PA in Hem/Onc or BMT.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as an Advanced Practice Provider.

  • Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues for APPs performing advanced-practice nursing or physician assistants within departments and specialty areas, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as patient-care concepts, policies, outcomes measurement, quality standards, ethics issues, quality improvement, and continuing staff education and professional development.

  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.

  • Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by APPs in providing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision.

  • Proven analytical and critical thinking skills, with ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies.

  • Solid written and verbal communications skills, with ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • One (1+) or more years of supervisory experience.

  • APP experience within UC San Diego Health.

  • Experience with related procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy.

  • AOCN (Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse)/AOCNP certification.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.

  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $149,700 - $297,700 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $71.70 - $142.58

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
