Job Summary

The Senior Pharmacist is an advanced practitioner in a specialized area of pharmacy practice, responsible for dispensing and monitoring a variety of distribution-related procedures and medication management, coordinating care with providers, and working to ensure legal and regulatory compliance. In addition, the incumbent is responsible to manage drug costs in his or her designated therapeutic area(s), facilitate cost containment, and ensure successful regulatory compliance efforts: a) creates/revises and presents master formula data to the Compounding Services Oversight Committee (CSOC) on new medication or concentration requests, b) works with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Coordinator to develop and conduct drug use evaluations, c) works with the Pharmacy Manager in streamlining Central Pharmacy training. The senior pharmacist also participates in medical staff committees as requested.

The Senior Pharmacist also participates in general operational patient care activities and provides support to various pharmacy areas as needed. Their responsibility is to provide quality and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to patients, employees and medical staff of UCDMC. They are an integral member of the health care team, responsible for dispensing and monitoring a variety of distribution-related tasks, medication management, drug therapy monitoring, drug information, precepting pharmacy students and residents, conducting clinical research, participation in Department and Hospital committees, task forces and work groups and fostering excellent interdepartmental relationships. They are also responsible for coordinating care with providers, creating consistent patient and provider service, and working to ensure successful legal and regulatory compliance efforts, and patient safety. Works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary care team.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • California Pharmacist License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR within 90 days of hire
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD), or equivalent training
  • Inpatient pharmacy experience including clinical, operations and regulatory compliance experience.
  • Completion of American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) Post Graduate Year One (PGY1) residency with 4 years of operational pharmacy experience
  • Foundational leadership skills to influence a large group in dynamic environments as well as be highly accountable for regulatory compliance efforts
  • Computer skills that facilitate medication order entry, electronic prescribing, physician order verification and other basic clinical software programs
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for clinic's/department's customers, to demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate manner, to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor, and to use a proactive approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action.
  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English.
  • Complete working knowledge and understanding of Title 22, DEA/ TJC standards, USP 795, USP 797, USP 800 and how they integrate within the inpatient setting, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
  • Ability to work with and direct health care professionals.
  • Working knowledge of sterile products and IV additive preparation.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to oversee and work with, direct and evaluate pharmacy technicians, residents and students, and establish priorities of workflow

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pharmacy Specialty Board Certification [e.g. Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS), etc.]
  • Completion of American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2) residency with 3 years of operational pharmacy experience
  • Drug distribution skills and techniques or ability to learn efficiently.

Department Overview

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
