SUMMARY The Johns Hopkins Health System (System) Controller will be responsible for overseeing the financial reporting and operations across the entire system, including the system's hospitals, various joint venture entities, outpatient centers, and physician practices. Working with the VP of Corporate Finance and various entity CFOs, the Controller will ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and accounting processes. The Controller will ensure the integrity of system financials and provide strategic insights to support decision-making. This individual will work closely with executive leadership to ensure the financial health of the system, optimize resource allocation, and improve financial performance across the enterprise. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP Controller will report directly to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer/ Johns Hopkins Health System Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Controller will have five (5) direct reports: Associate Controller, Assistant Controller, Executive Director Tax Compliance, Director Fixed Asset/Project Accounting & Director Accounts Payable Shared Services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Oversee the preparation of consolidated financial statements for Johns Hopkins Health System, Physician Practices, Joint Ventures and related entities, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other relevant regulations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, Executive Team and department heads.
- Analyze financial performance, including revenue, expenses, and key financial metrics, providing insights and recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting for Johns Hopkins Health System, Physician Practices, Joint Ventures and related entities.
Accounting & Internal Controls:
- Lead and manage the system-wide accounting team, ensuring the accurate recording of all financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger entries.
- Develop and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets, ensure compliance, and prevent fraud.
- In partnership with entity level CFOs, oversee the month-end and year-end close processes for all entities within Johns Hopkins Health System, Physician Practices, Joint Ventures and related entities, ensuring all accounting records are accurate and complete.
- Conduct regular reviews of financial transactions and processes to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- In conjunction with the Vice President Budget, Financial Analysis and Decision Support, as well as entity CFOs, monitor budget performance across Johns Hopkins Health System, Physician Practices, Joint Ventures and related entities.
- Work with the Vice President Budget, Financial Analysis and Decision Support, as well as entity CFOs to develop and update monthly forecasts, ensuring alignment with financial goals and objectives.
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight:
- Ensure the Johns Hopkins Health System, Physician Practices, Joint Ventures and related entities are in compliance with all applicable accounting regulations, tax laws, and industry-specific financial guidelines.
- Coordinate and lead external audits with the intention of a clean opinion and no material audit adjustments. Ensuring accurate and timely completion of the audit and address any findings or recommendations expeditiously.
- Maintain knowledge and expertise in healthcare regulations, accounting standards, and tax laws to ensure the organization's financial practices remain compliant.
Financial Systems & Process Improvement:
- Consistently lead and participate in innovation and improvement of financial accounting systems and tools across Johns Hopkins Health System, Physician Practices, Joint Ventures and related entities ensuring they meet the needs of the organization and enhance financial reporting accuracy, and value to stakeholders.
- Evaluate and streamline financial processes to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and support growth.
- Work closely with IT and other departments to ensure proper integration between financial systems and other organizational platforms.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing central accounting and finance team.
- Provide coaching and support for staff to ensure professional growth, including regular performance reviews and skill development opportunities.
- Foster a collaborative work environment, ensuring open communication and alignment of financial goals across departments.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS Education: CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or MBA (Master of Business Administration) required. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Experience:
- Minimum of 7-10 years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial or leadership role in healthcare finance.
- Strong understanding of healthcare financial systems, regulations, and the unique financial needs of hospitals, physician practices, outpatient centers, and other healthcare services.
- Proven experience in financial operations, reporting, forecasting, and compliance within a complex, multi-entity healthcare environment.
- Experience with financial software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (e.g., Epic, SAP, Workday, or similar).
Skills:
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead and inspire a diverse team.
- Expertise in financial reporting, analysis, and accounting principles specific to healthcare organizations.
- In-depth knowledge of healthcare regulations, reimbursement methodologies, and compliance requirements.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to senior management, clinicians, and non-financial stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in financial software and systems.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Full-time position based in the health system's corporate office or central administrative location.
- Occasional travel required to health system facilities, hospitals, or outpatient centers.
