Position Overview
The agent in this position will have educational responsibilities in all phases of livestock production, forage, field crops, and waste management. The successful candidate must be able to conduct educational programs that focus on the profitability and sustainability of North Carolina livestock, utilizing best practices based on research, including the adoption of proven technology, business, and financial practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for applied research development in the program area.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University.Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Encompassing a sprawling 546-square mile radius and home to approximately 57,000 residents, Haywood County stands as the third largest county in western North Carolina, following Buncombe and Henderson Counties. Haywood County is a picturesque destination nestled 20 miles west of Asheville and home to the charming communities of Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, Canton, and Clyde. Renowned for its 46 miles along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the county beckons outdoor enthusiasts with four entrances leading to a myriad of hiking trails, breathtaking overlooks, and inviting picnic spots. Haywood County boasts a slice of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, contributing to its distinction as the most visited National Park in the U.S. As a designated Blue Ridge Heritage area, the region exudes creativity in arts and crafts.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Livestock Agent will:
- Provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.
- Be a team player and support the total Extension program.
- Network with broad audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and the local Extension staff.
- Actively seek outside resources to enhance the program.
- Develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs.
- The Extension Agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective livestock educational program to meet the needs of the county.
- This position demands a responsible and self-motivated individual with outstanding relationship skills and a strong background in livestock production and 4-H youth livestock development.
- The position will also include responsibilities for forages.
