Position Highlights

The Department of Surgery is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator to support the research functions (including in vivo studies) at the Institute for Cellular Transplantation (ICT). Research at the ICT focuses on cell therapies, tissue engineering, and artificial organ research and is developing an implantable medical device that will be used in a cell-based therapy for the treatment of diabetes. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, be well-organized, and be highly motivated. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as collaborate with others within the laboratory. **Please note, this position requires flexibility, including working outside of standard business hours as needed.**

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic direction in collaboration with research leadership team for the Islet Isolation Program. The role requires direct participation in human islet isolations when donor organs are available that includes:
  1. Screening donors and communicating with external OPOs professionally.
  2. Ensuring isolation facility is prepared.
  3. Provides guidance and advise isolation team during isolations.
  4. Help to maintain data and documentation adequate for regulatory oversight.
  5. Be available to advise and assist with isolations on nights and weekends.
  • Outside on-call isolation hands-on work, responsible for helping to coordinate and guide the work of student researchers and staff to manage Islet Isolation Program inventory, data acquisition and analysis, as well as summarizing data related to islets isolated at center.
  • Oversee the isolation facility, troubleshoots and maintains islet isolation equipment, and will work with vendors, reaching out for quotes and service as needed. Train users in equipment operation and research techniques as it relates to islet isolations and organ preservation.
  • Review all islet documentation for adherence to accuracy, relevant information, and accessibility for regulatory review.
  • Performs isolated islet assessment and culture tasks independently, with expert knowledge of instructions and procedures.
  • Develop SOPs related to Islet Isolation.
  • Partners with other functional areas and departmental leadership for needs assessments, process improvements, recommended solutions and implementation of programs/initiatives.
  • Supports leadership by assisting with training of students and staff in the laboratory for general training related to Research and Laboratory Safety Services.
  • Completes routine administrative and technical support to research projects (photocopies, files, and record keeping).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with data management or database (RedCap, Access, etc.) and competence in statistical software package (SAS, SPSS, Stata, or R).
  • Knowledge of university procedures/policies regarding Sponsored Projects and IRB.
  • Computer literate in all critical programs (Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel and Publisher) and the aptitude to learn new software as necessary for grant writing, presentations, fiscal management and website/brochure creation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
