Position description

Specialist- Johnson Lab

Department of Microbiology & Immunology

University of California, San Francisco

The broad research interests of the lab are in understanding the molecular mechanisms through which new gene expression patterns evolve in yeasts, including fungal pathogens of humans. Applicant will conduct original research in microbial genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry, involving, but not limited to, primer design, PCR, yeast and bacterial transformations, gene disruption, validation colony PCRs, plasmid construction, sequencing, RNA extraction and sequencing, quantitative real-time qPCR, and functional analysis of microbial deletion mutants; perform general lab maintenance of laboratory stocks of DNA, bacteria, and yeast strains; update relevant databases; send requested strains out, maintain equipment, coordinate regulatory compliance. Applicant is expected to independently design, troubleshoot, and interpret experiments. Applicant will Design and perform laboratory experiments as described above; present results to lab; provide feedback on other lab member's data. Perform routine lab equipment maintenance, sending out strains and reagents to other investigators; organizing and ordering lab supplies.

Required Qualifications:



  • Junior Specialist- A baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.
  • Assistant- Master's degree or a baccalaureate degree with three or more years of research experience.
  • Associate Specialist- Master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of relevant experience.
  • Full Specialist- Terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of relevant experience.
  • Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment.
