The Associate, Corporate Venturing, will support the Manager, Corporate Venturing to maximize the strategic value of NRG's Corporate Venture Capital ("CVC") fund by enhancing connectivity between NRG's external Corporate Venture partner and NRG's business units. The Associate will play a critical role in supporting and expanding NRG's CVC program by absorbing existing operational responsibilities and owning net-new expansion initiatives to increase the impact of the CVC fund. The Associate will enhance existing CVC operations by tracking fund impact, improving processes, managing high-priority stakeholders and developing fund deliverables. Additionally, the Associate will be responsible for actively identifying, constructing and executing on new opportunities to expand the program's reach.

The Associate will work regularly with internal stakeholders, such as the CVC Working team, subject matter experts, and business units, while also interacting with external parties such as NRG's CVC partner, startups, investors and other members of the startup ecosystem. Overall, the Associate's goal will be to support CVC in its pursuit of program KPIs by generating and providing insights that support potential investments, start-up partners, pilots, learnings, or other valuable fund programs, initiatives and activities.

This role will report into the Manager of Corporate Venturing, a member of the Corporate Strategy team's Discovery and Insights group. The Discovery and Insights team sits on the cutting edge of technologies and markets to help NRG look ahead to the future. The broader Corporate Strategy team also engages in early-stage and emerging opportunity identification, investment and testing to promote sustained value creation and competitive advantage.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Generate high-quality market intelligence through:
    • Startup-specific memos and updates
    • Perspectives on recent fundraises and financing rounds
    • Reports on venture market trends and associated implications for NRG
    • Thematic and sector-focused deep dives
  • Develop and present clear, concise reports and presentations summarizing investment research and recommendations, including but not limited to the following:
    • Ad-hoc materials such as CVC program overviews, introduction decks, board materials and presentations related to specific, high-priority investment or commercial opportunities
    • Scheduled deliverables including newsletters, quarterly management updates, and year-end reviews
  • Collaborate with internal and external experts to assess investment strategies, monitor portfolio performance, and make necessary adjustments to align with investment and fund goals
  • Track progress toward fund KPIs, particularly those that highlight the program's impact on NRG
  • Lead the competitor innovation and investment tracking workstream
  • Support stakeholder management by streamlining meeting documentation, tracking outstanding questions, and ensuring that follow-up actions are cleared on intended schedule
  • Improve program documentation by owning the development of one-pagers, post-mortems, and a centralized document repository
  • Optimize usage and value from PitchBook, other venture tools and secondary sources

* Manage logistics and scheduling for major events (e.g., Sector Sessions, Demo Days)

* Attend relevant start-up events to continue building internal perspective on start-up landscape

  • Provide support for the broader Corporate Strategy team on an ad-hoc basis

Working Conditions:

* Located in Houston, TX office (Downtown)

* Hybrid workforce segmentation (3 days in the office per week)

* Some overtime required as special projects arise

* Some travel may be required

Minimum Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree and excellent academic record

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in a highly dynamic corporate setting
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, research and communication skills with the ability to evaluate and synthesize insights into compelling deliverables
  • Proficiency with tools such as MS PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and meet deadlines
  • Collaborative, proactive, and eager to contribute to a growing and dynamic team
  • Creativity and futuristic thought

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience or demonstrated interest in venture capital or corporate VC a plus

* Background in energy and home services industry

  • Prior experience working with cross-functional teams

* Teamwork and cross-functional leadership skills

* Willingness and ability to work in an environment of uncertainty

* Excellent communication skills; i.e. effectively communicates with internal groups on ideas and resolves issues
