Role Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Equipment Design Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the full lifecycle of automation equipment design, from conceptualization through to detailed engineering and build support. The role requires hands-on experience in designing and developing automation cells, integrating various mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical components, and ensuring all designs meet performance, cost, and safety standards.

This opportunity is based out of Form Energy's Weirton, WV facility. Relocation assistance is available.

What you'll do:
  • Design and develop custom automation cells, equipment, and fixtures using 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor).

  • Create detailed engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and documentation for fabrication and assembly.

  • Design mechanical systems including conveyors, pneumatic actuators, and fixturing to meet specific application requirements.

  • Component Integration:

    • Integrate a variety of sensors (e.g., proximity, photo-electric, vision systems) into equipment designs.

    • Select and specify purchased components, such as motors, gearboxes, and pneumatic valves.

  • Fabrication and Assembly Support:

    • Design sheet metal parts for machine frames, enclosures, and brackets, and provide fabrication drawings.

    • Collaborate with fabricators, machinists, and assembly technicians to ensure designs are manufacturable and assembled correctly.

  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Incorporate machine safety guarding and safety components (e.g., light curtains, interlocks) to meet industry standards and regulations (e.g., ANSI, OSHA).

    • Conduct design reviews to ensure designs are robust, safe, and efficient.

  • Project Management:

    • Work with cross-functional teams to define project scope, timelines, and deliverables.

    • Provide technical support during the build, debug, and installation phases of a project.

What you'll bring:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the design of automation equipment, custom machinery, or similar capital equipment.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, etc.).

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, pneumatics, and common automation components.

  • Familiarity with fabrication processes, including machining and sheet metal fabrication.

  • Experience with machine safety standards and the design of safety guarding.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
