The Assistant Director of IT Project Management provides leadership, strategic planning, and oversight for the design, development, and deployment of client services and IT projects. Reporting to the Director of the Computer Services Group, this role is responsible for managing multiple project workstreams, coordinating testing and validation, and ensuring successful go-live implementations. This position plays a key role in shaping the technological infrastructure and service delivery that supports the operational and strategic needs of the department.

As a technical expert, the Assistant Director of IT Project Management oversees all aspects of client infrastructure deployment, business applications, and desktop support. Key responsibilities include project management, resource allocation, budgeting, strategic planning, and level-3 technical escalations. The Assistant Director serves as the primary project manager for IT initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, managing timelines and deliverables, mitigating risks, and maintaining compliance with industry best practices and security standards.

The Assistant Director leads and oversees the IT helpdesk team, ensuring high quality desktop support, troubleshooting, and issue resolution for Student Housing and Dining Services staff. The Assistant Director plays a critical role in optimizing IT support services by implementing best practices, developing efficient workflows, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This includes identifying areas for automation, improving response times, and enhancing end-user training programs to promote self-service solutions where applicable.

The Assistant Director of Project Management collaborates with various university stakeholders, including campus-wide student information systems, facilities management and other IT divisions to support staff effectively. The position requires proactive engagement with departmental leadership to assess technology needs, develop long-term strategies, and implement innovative solutions that enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in IT or related area and/or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in leadership, strategic planning, and oversight for the design, development, and deployment of client services and IT projects.
  • Experience in managing multiple IT projects, including balancing competing priorities, facilitating stakeholder collaboration, problem -solving, and ensuring projects are completed efficiently and within budget. Ability to plan for contingencies and develop initiative-taking solutions to mitigate risks and meet deadlines while ensuring project success.
  • Experience preparing a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, agreements, training documents, and presentations as well as interpersonal, customer service, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively interact with the campus community, internal customers, and team members to develop working relationships and provide information.
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to understand the business environment and to translate those needs to solutions; resolve complex business and technical problems; enhance site functionality and productivity; evaluate and recommend new computing devices and software application tools and techniques.
  • Proven ability to adapt to frequent changes in work priorities, scope, and schedules while maintaining efficiency and delivering high-quality results.
  • Shows ability to delegate and oversee assignments to ensure successful and timely completion and to obtain the cooperation of others within and outside the unit. Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with technology-related initiatives in auxiliary enterprise environments within a university setting, particularly in software systems supporting residential housing and dining operations.
  • Expertise in cybersecurity and information security best practices, with the ability to advise users on cyber safety protocols, compliance requirements, and secure computing practices.
  • Advanced skills in creating comprehensive technical documentation for complex processes, applications, and IT systems, ensuring clarity and usability for end-users and IT staff.
  • Mastery of best practices in project management discipline.

Department Overview

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. The Business Operations and Services unit of Student Housing and Dining Services provides students and summer conference guests university home options through seamless operational processes and exemplary service. Over 15,000 student contracts and leases for family and graduate apartments, single undergraduate apartments, and residence hall rooms are managed, with an annual revenue budget of $140+ million dollars. Residence Halls are used to accommodate conference housing guests during the summer, to maximize income and provide extended stay opportunities for potential students and guests of UC Davis programs.
