Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of the Computer Services Group, this position provides leadership, strategic planning, resource allocation, and technical oversight for the design, development, and operational management of all critical business applications within Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS). Additionally, the role involves extensive collaboration with campus-wide student information systems to support UC Davis students, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Director of Application Development defines, recommends, and implements technical and business-critical solutions by facilitating collaboration and resolving complex problems that span diverse administrative and residential stakeholders. This position leads a team of application developers responsible for designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, and administering applications, secure web applications, and web services that are essential to SHDS operations. As the Unit Information Security Lead (UISL) for SHDS, this position establishes and enforces departmental standards related to information security. Responsibilities include coordinating and facilitating Vendor Risk Assessments (VRAs) for SHDS application platforms, overseeing change management practices, incident reporting, asset management, cyber hygiene, and applying a risk-based approach to decision-making. The incumbent collaborates with the Student Affairs UISL and campus Information Security Office (ISO) to align departmental practices with institutional policies and standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with the MVC design pattern and in developing software applications using Microsoft technologies, including ASP.NET, VB.NET, MVC framework and/or C#.
  • Experience in database development using MS SQL Server, including writing and implementing SQL Queries, stored procedures, views, and other SQL Server objects to efficiently access and manage database content.
  • Experience with web programming protocols and languages including CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, SOAP and HTML. Demonstrated ability to code, test, certify, maintain and document all developed programs and scripts effectively.
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to understand the business environment and translate its needs into effective solutions. Demonstrated ability to resolve complex business and technical problems, enhance site functionality and productivity, evaluate and recommend new programming tools and techniques and select the most appropriate programming and scripting tools for specific tasks.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of best practices and web security principles. Excellent communication skills to develop clear documentation, effectively convey ideas, and facilitate knowledge transfers. Strong time management and organizational skills to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously and ensure their successful completion.

  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with the campus community, internal customers, and team members. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships, exchange information, resolve issues and develop solutions to achieve organizational objectives
  • Knowledge of server-side management, including the security of transactions, to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and reliability of data and systems.
  • Knowledge of multi-user programming techniques, as well as network configurations, terminology, and protocols to support efficient and secure system operations in a collaborative environment.
  • Knowledge of relational database principles, rules and techniques including database schemas, relationships and the use of primary and foreign keys, as well as junction tables in database design, to ensure efficient data organization and integrity.

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owned/managed and Public-Private Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. Work Environment
