Position Summary

The Environmental Compliance Technical Writer is critical in preparing, reviewing, and managing technical documentation related to compliance services, extending from NPDES permitting, environmental compliance and engineering, Emergency Response, and technical data. The candidate will prepare and oversee production of high-quality documents that clearly convey the Compliance Services workload including regulatory permits, field sample plans, engineering reports, technical data. The role requires close collaboration with scientists, project managers, engineers, and operations to ensure that reports, manuals, proposals, statements of qualifications and guidelines align with regulatory and company standards, project goals, and client expectations as well as technical scopes and budgets.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Technical Writing & Documentation

  • Prepare and review technical reports related to engineering services, environmental assessments, federal and state environmental permits, and construction projects.

  • Prepare technical scopes of work for proposals and technical reports. Common scopes may include but not be limited to multimedia sampling, waste characterization, stormwater, spill prevention, permitting, due diligence, etc.

  • Execute and oversee editing and release of technical materials.

  • Provide support within the department such as standard work, creative communications, and presentations.

  • Develop technical descriptions of the various compliance service projects to support business development and preparation of qualification statements.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Collaborate with scientists, project managers, engineers, and operations to translate complex technical data into clear and concise language for reporting or proposal purposes.

  • Participate in meetings with cross-functional teams to gather the necessary technical information.

  • Track project and opportunity status and provide updates to the Compliance Services team.

Quality Assurance

  • Review and edit documents to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency.

  • Ensure that all written materials are properly referenced, cited, and include accurate data.

  • Maintain document version control and organize the technical document library.

Client Communication & Reporting

  • Prepare client-facing documents, including reports, proposals, and project updates.

  • Ensure that deliverables meet deadlines and quality standards while reflecting the objectives of the projects.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: B.S. in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Technical Writing, or a related field.

  • Experience: Minimum of 4 years of previous professional experience in technical writing, especially in engineering, geology, or environmental science.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience:

    • 6+ years of technical writing experience within the environmental compliance science sector.

    • Experience working with regulatory bodies such as NOAA, EPA, or USACE on environmental compliance.

    • Proficiency with technical writing tools, such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and content management systems (CMS).

    • Experience with preparation of project specifications and bid documents.

    • Able to complete concurrent assignments in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and stay on schedule.

    • Experience with business development and preparation of marketing materials such as brochures, project descriptions and flow charts.

Desired Skills:

  • Self-starter with strong attention to detail, ensuring technical accuracy and clarity in every document.

  • Capacity to understand and synthesize complex scientific data and environmental information.

  • Excellent teamwork and people skills for working with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to adjust writing style to meet the needs of different audiences (technical staff, clients, regulatory agencies).

Work Environment

We enjoy and appreciate collaboration as a team and expect excellent communication from the candidate. Teamwork is anticipated through one on one's with staff but will also need to occur through many phone and text/email conversions. Work will consist of office time to collaborate with other managers and staff.

This candidate is expected to come into the Stow, Ohio office to assist staff and project workload. A blended work from home and office schedule may be considered and dependent on manager approval.

Standard office equipment will be provided to work in the office and at home - a dedicated space at home to work is also required. Uninterrupted home-based internet is a must in your home to attend and host video calls, along with a minimum bandwidth speed of 20 mbps. If you do not, an Office space will be provided for you in the Stow office.

  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 lbs.

Travel Requirements: Travel is minimal, but the candidate should have the ability to travel locally to support a project as needed.
