Position description

Associate/Full Professor of Surgery - Burn Unit Medical Director

Department of Surgery

University of California, San Francisco

The Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, is seeking a full-time academic surgeon at the Associate or Full Professor level to serve as the Burn Unit Medical Director. We seek an exceptional candidate with a demonstrated record of excellence in patient care and significant expertise in burn surgery, along with additional training or experience in surgical critical care and/or plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Candidates must be board-certified by the American Board of Surgery or the American Board of Plastic Surgery and must be Fellows in good standing of the American College of Surgeons. Applicants should also have documented experience working in an American Burn Association (ABA)-verified burn center and/or demonstrate leadership experience within a burn care system. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, and a record of scholarly activity in burn surgery is preferred. This position is primarily based at St. Francis Memorial Hospital and reports jointly to the Chief Medical Officer of St. Francis and the Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCSF.

As the Burn Unit Medical Director, the successful candidate will provide clinical leadership in burn surgery, oversee the multidisciplinary burn program, and serve as the principal liaison for strategic planning and operational coordination with both hospital and UCSF Department of Surgery leadership. The Burn Unit Medical Director is responsible for ensuring that the quality of burn care consistently meets or exceeds ABA verification standards and reflects the hospital's role as the sole provider of comprehensive burn care for the City and County of San Francisco.

This leadership role includes both institutional and regional responsibilities, including the development of strong partnerships with emergency medical services and community hospitals to ensure timely evaluation, transfer, and care of critically ill burn patients. Involvement in regional disaster planning and mass casualty preparedness is also expected, reflecting the Burn Center's critical role in the city's emergency response infrastructure.

In collaboration with the Burn Program Manager, the Burn Medical Director will lead efforts to maintain the Burn Center's ABA verification status. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the development and implementation of institutional policies, protocols, and procedures to enhance the quality and cost-effectiveness of burn care.

Candidates must have recognized skills in the education of surgery residents and medical students and will be expected to be active participants in the Department's residency, fellowship training, and educational programs.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $190,600 - $405,900. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
