JOB TITLE: WLAN Architect
AGENCY SUPPORTED: Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - USCIS OIT Architecture Engineering Support (AES2)
LOCATION: Fully Remote
POSITION TYPE: Full-time
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT: Must be able to obtain DHS Suitability security clearance, which typically requires 2-4 weeks for processing and must be completed prior to the start date.

The project supports USCIS's Office of Information Technology by delivering enterprise IT architecture, engineering, and solution development services. The team partners across OIT to design, implement, and optimize leading-edge technologies-including cloud, network, Zero Trust architecture, automation, and AI/ML-using agile and DevOps practices. The work enables USCIS to modernize IT systems, enhance mission delivery, and support major enterprise initiatives such as digitization, cloud migration, and software-defined networking.

The WLAN Architect will be responsible for the design, architecture, and optimization of enterprise wireless LAN infrastructure to ensure high-performance, secure, and reliable connectivity across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. This role requires deep expertise in RF planning, 802.11 standards, Wi-Fi 6, and advanced wireless security protocols, along with hands-on experience integrating WLAN solutions with cloud networking, automation, and SD-WAN technologies.



Responsibilities

    Architect and design enterprise-grade WLAN solutions ensuring performance, scalability, and security.
  • Conduct RF planning, spectrum analysis, and capacity modeling for high-density environments.
  • Implement and tune WLAN performance based on 802.11 standards and Wi-Fi 6 technologies.
  • Design and enforce wireless security protocols including WPA3 and RADIUS.
  • Integrate WLAN solutions with cloud networking platforms and SD-WAN.
  • Automate WLAN deployment, monitoring, and management for operational efficiency.
  • Develop wireless architecture standards, policies, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, stakeholders, and leadership to ensure alignment with enterprise objectives.
  • Provide architectural oversight during implementation and transition to operations.


Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • 7-10+ years of experience in wireless networking and design/architecture.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field strongly preferred; Advanced degree, preferred.
  • Proven expertise in:
    • Wireless LAN design/architecture
    • RF planning and spectrum management
    • 11 standards and Wi-Fi 6 deployment
    • Security protocols including WPA3 and RADIUS
    • Wireless network performance tuning and optimization
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence enterprise-level technology strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to design WLAN solutions that balance performance, security, and scalability.
  • Must be eligible to obtain DHS Suitability clearance.

DESIRED:

  • Experience with WLAN automation and cloud networking integration
  • Experience with SD-WAN technologies

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position is fully remote. Candidates must have a dedicated workspace, reliable internet connectivity, and the ability to participate in virtual meetings and collaborate effectively with distributed teams.
