At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

The Director of Engineering Data Systems & Architecture (EDSA) supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a heavy-lift launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying payloads to Earth's orbit and beyond. You will lead a team working at the intersection of systems engineering, aerospace, software and data engineering disciplines. You'll be responsible for the strategy and execution of technical data platforms that translate complex engineering requirements into foundational tools and systems, enabling critical decisions across the New Glenn program lifecycle-from design through build, launch to landing, post-flight analytical evaluation to repair.

We are seeking an exceptional technical leader who combines systems engineering expertise with the ability to build and scale enterprise data platforms. You'll lead a team of engineers responsible for internally-developed platforms that have become fundamental to New Glenn's success and are increasingly adopted across Blue Origin. This role demands someone who can navigate the complexity of launch vehicle systems while building robust data architectures to manage a large amount of engineering data across multiple vehicle and ground systems. You'll partner with hardware engineers, vehicle designers, flight vehicle & ground system software developers, test engineers, and flight operations teams to ensure our platforms capture, validate, and analyze the critical engineering data that governs vehicle configuration, enables system health assurance, and accelerates mission-to-mission cycle time.

Your leadership will shape how New Glenn engineering teams' ability to make data-driven decisions, from component-level design choices to vehicle-wide system health assurance in a time efficient manner. You'll drive the evolution from reactive support to proactive capability development, building platforms that empower engineers with self-service and automation capabilities while maintaining the precision and reliability required for spaceflight.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Systems-First Leadership: Guide architectural decisions that reflect deep understanding of launch vehicle systems, translating complex multi-disciplinary requirements into scalable platform capabilities
  • Strategic Platform Development: Define and execute a multi-year strategy that enables engineering teams to rapidly make informed decisions about vehicle design, health, and readiness
  • Technical Excellence: Maintain the highest standards for data integrity, system reliability, and platform performance across mission-critical systems
  • Organizational Impact: Build and nurture a high-performing team culture that balances customer responsiveness with foundational platform improvements
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Serve as trusted technical advisor to Chief Engineers, Systems Engineering, Flight Software and Test & Flight Operations leadership
  • Complexity Management: Systematically reduce engineering data complexity through intelligent platform design and process optimization
  • Scale Through Empowerment: Create intuitive, well-documented capabilities that enable customer autonomy and accelerate program velocity
  • Lead a team of backend/frontend developers, systems data engineers, and technical product managers
  • Own the technical roadmap and architecture for platforms managing vehicle configuration, telemetry, operational data, as well as an advanced test and flight analytical engine
  • Partner with New Glenn leadership to define System Health Assurance strategies and capabilities
  • Drive adoption of modern development practices while maintaining aerospace-grade reliability standards
  • Establish governance frameworks for multi-program platform development
  • Balance immediate operational demands with long-term platform sustainability
  • Champion technical excellence while fostering psychological safety for innovation and learning
  • Translate between highly technical engineering domains and software development requirements
  • Guide platform evolution to harness emerging technologies including AI/ML where appropriate

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related technical field
  • 8+ years of industry experience in aerospace, systems engineering, manufacturing, or complex hardware/software integration environments
  • 5+ years of people management experience leading technical teams
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with software engineering teams (as leader or individual contributor)
  • Deep technical expertise in at least one: systems engineering, aerospace engineering or enterprise data platform architecture
  • Proven ability to work at the intersection of hardware and software domains
  • Experience leading complex technical programs with evolving requirements and constraints
  • Track record of building trust and influence across organizational boundaries
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across all organizational levels
  • Familiarity with Python, Java, React, or similar data platform technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in relevant technical field
  • Experience with launch vehicle or spacecraft development programs
  • Background in telemetry systems, test or flight data analysis, and/or vehicle health monitoring
  • Demonstrated success scaling technical platforms from inception to enterprise adoption
  • Experience with configuration management and PLM systems in an aerospace context
  • Knowledge of modern web services architectures and API design
  • Understanding of manufacturing execution systems and operational technology
  • Track record of building high-performing technical teams
  • Experience driving cultural transformation in engineering organizations
