Purpose

The Lead Clinical Informaticist applies informatics knowledge to bridge clinical operations, revenue cycle, and IT, driving the adoption and optimization of standard workflows across ambulatory and enterprise-wide systems. Reporting to the Chief Medical Informatics Officer, this role collaborates with clinical and operational leadership, EHR end users, and IT teams to lead transformational initiatives. This position serves as the informatics lead on large ambulatory projects, guiding workflow analysis, system design, build, testing, KPI development, and post-go-live optimization. The role also leads governance groups focused on EHR and operational transformation.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Leads Ambulatory Informatics Projects

  • Serves as informatics lead on large ambulatory projects.

  • Executes workflow analysis, design, build, testing, and communication planning.

  • Develops KPIs and escalates barriers pre- and post-go-live.

  • Ensures standard workflows are implemented and sustained.

  • Aligns project execution with system life cycle and transformation standards.

Drives EHR Optimization and Standardization

  • Rounds in clinics to assess workflow usability and adoption.

  • Identifies opportunities for standardization and removes barriers to adoption.

  • Guides optimization efforts to meet operational goals and compliance standards.

  • Advises on regulatory, quality, and documentation standards.

  • Modifies system build to reflect optimized workflows.

Leads Governance and Strategic Alignment

  • Facilitates ambulatory EHR and operational governance groups.

  • Provides workflow and informatics expertise to guide decision-making.

  • Partners with leadership to develop ambulatory informatics vision and strategy.

  • Guides project teams through technology governance processes.

  • Ensures alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

Applies Lean Methodologies for Efficiency

  • Independently applies PDCA and SOP documentation to drive improvements.

  • Coaches team members in Lean principles and standard work documentation.

  • Identifies opportunities to revise standard work and executes changes system-wide.

  • Documents and communicates process improvements.

  • Ensures adoption of Lean practices across ambulatory clinics.

Provides Leadership and Mentorship

  • Coaches and mentors informatics team members.

  • Validates educational materials developed by training teams.

  • Triages and prioritizes optimization requests with clear communication to leadership.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert on informatics best practices.

  • Establishes strong relationships with physicians, allied health staff, and operational leaders.

Supports Change Management and Communication

  • Leads change management efforts for informatics initiatives.

  • Develops and executes communication plans for system changes.

  • Ensures stakeholder engagement and readiness.

  • Monitors adoption and addresses resistance.

  • Provides ongoing support and feedback loops post-implementation.

Marginal or Periodic Functions:

  • Participates in vendor evaluations and contract discussions.

  • Represents the organization at informatics conferences and professional forums.

  • Supports disaster recovery and business continuity planning.

  • Contributes to grant proposals and research initiatives.

  • Assists with enterprise-wide informatics strategy development.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Health Informatics, Health Information Management, or related field.

  • 5 years of experience in clinical informatics within a healthcare organization.

  • Experience in direct patient care, nursing, or other clinical areas.

  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration, or related discipline.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) or other clinical designation (MD, PharmD).

Preferred:

  • Certification in assigned Epic applications within 6 months of employment.

  • Certification in Informatics within 1 year of employment.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP).
