About the Job

This temporary, full-time exempt position is expected to continue through June 14, 2026, with potential for extension depending on departmental needs and funding.

Job Summary:

An experienced clinical and translational researcher in dermatology is needed to join Dr. Maria Hordinsky's dermatology clinical and translational research team. The clinical and translational research lead position involves leading the development, design, and completion of research projects, abstract submissions, and manuscripts for the clinical research team. The position involves coordinating the orderly and proper collection of research data, organization and optimization of data display, and coordination of effective literature reviews to facilitate the completion of scientific manuscripts through writing, editing, and submission of manuscripts for possible publication.

This position involves writing grant applications as a principal or co- investigator, including but not limited to internal University of Minnesota grant applications, Scientific Society or Foundation grant applications, and NIH and DOD grant applications. The position also involves mentoring research fellows/students/trainees on ongoing clinical research projects. This position requires a leader who will coordinate interdisciplinary team members, and drive initiatives from conception, execution, submission, and review.

The Clinical and Translational Research Lead will:

  • Oversee research project development, design, and completion.
  • Ensure timely progress on research projects, literature reviews, and manuscript preparation.
  • Write and assist with competitive grant applications.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical and Translational Research Project Lead 50%

  • Develops, researches, and supervises procedures and techniques required for the completion of multiple dermatological clinical and translational research projects. Examples include processing of clinical samples of platelet rich plasma, exosome quantification and characterization, growth factor quantification using multiplex and ELISA assays, processing of tissue for single cell sequencing, cell culture, histology and molecular biology techniques.
  • Coordinates the analysis of highly complex methods and protocols while concurrently solving complex experimental design problems.
  • Establishes multidisciplinary collaborations with team members from other laboratories such as the cytokine reference laboratory, cancer center, nano center, genomic center, supercomputing institute.
  • Facilitates regular project meetings and provides updates to research team members at weekly dermatology clinical research division and dermatology clinical research laboratory meetings.

Grant and Manuscript Writing 30%

  • Duties include writing grant applications as a principal or co-investigator, including but not limited to internal University of Minnesota grant applications, Scientific Society or Foundation grant applications, and NIH and DOD grant applications.
  • Responsible for orderly and proper collection and analysis of research data, optimization of data display.
  • Report research results for submission to scientific journals and conferences.
  • Provide assistance in project development and drafting proposals.

Teaching and Mentoring 10%

  • Teach and mentor graduate students, medical students, research fellows/residents/other trainees and clinical staff on ongoing clinical projects.
  • Collaborate as a mentor to a funded study for a new faculty member at Baylor University.

Research Regulatory Management 5%

  • The successful candidate will partner with the dermatology clinical research regulatory team to be able to coordinate development, review, submission, and maintenance of IRB and other regulatory protocols on behalf of the Clinical and Translational Division Laboratory in the Department of Dermatology.

Administration 5%

  • Duties include managing labs in the Cancer Center and Moos tower. This includes compliance with university laboratory regulations, maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Life Sciences with 5+ years of relevant research experience.
  • Substantial research and publication record.
  • Expert knowledge in innovative experimental approaches, e.g., cytokine/growth factor quantification assays (multiplex, ELISA), exosome characterization (NTA, F-NTA), genomic (single cell and TCR sequencing, spatial transcriptomics), imaging and cell culture techniques.
  • Experience managing a translational research laboratory.
  • Expert knowledge in growth factors.
  • Expert knowledge in use of large databases.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Life Sciences with 10+ years of relevant experience in clinical and translational dermatological research.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to be able to effectively collaborate with team members effectively.
  • Record of scientific achievement in dermatology as indicated by publications and presentations at scientific conferences.

Pay Range: Expected annual salary will be $89,003.20.
