Qualifications

Education and Experience: Associate's degree (or two years of college coursework).

Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying full-time professional law enforcement, relevant military experience, or police work can be substituted for the required education to a maximum of two (2) years.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants for this class must:

  1. Be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons; nor shall applicant be prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm per 18 U.S.C. * 922(g) or any other state or federal law;
  2. Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age on the date of application;
  3. Must be a citizen of the United States, or a permanent legal resident of the United States provided, that the applicant applies for or obtains United States citizenship within six (6) years of the employment start date with TBI.
  4. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license;
  5. Upon appointment, be willing to and able to obtain a Security Clearance.
  6. Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint based criminal history records check;
  7. Complete a criminal history and background disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority and agree to release all records involving any criminal history or necessary records to the appointing authority;
  8. Be subject to an intense background investigation in a manner prescribed by the appointing authority, which includes but not limited to a check of State and Federal criminal records, driving history, social media accounts, credit check, education, military, previous employment, drug use, and reference verification as well as a polygraph examination to this effect, which will require some travel to the appointment;
  9. A candidate must not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty to, or entered a plea of nolo contendre to any violation of any federal or state law or city ordinance considered a felony or a misdemeanor based on integrity (to include, but not limited to: force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, DUI, or controlled substances). This includes a sufficient number of misdemeanors, of any nature, to establish a pattern of disregard for the law. Violations considered "youthful indiscretions" or experimentation (domestic related offenses excluded) may be considered on a case by case basis by the appointing authority;
  10. Have no conviction for a felony or have been discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces;
  11. Must participate in pre-employment, random and for cause drug and substance abuse testing as required by departmental policies and procedures;
  12. Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position;
  13. Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position.

Overview

This classification is responsible for pre-employment background investigations, TBI building security, apprehending and arresting suspects, and assisting TBI Special Agents. An incumbent in this classification performs duties at the entry/training level under the direct guidance of a supervisor. This series has second and third levels that function at a more complex capacity.

*An applicant appointed to this Career Path series will be reclassified to the next higher class in the series after successful completion of a mandatory probation period and all required qualifications of the TBI Police Officer 2; `unacceptable or `needs improvement performance during the probation period will result in automatic demotion or termination.

Responsibilities

  1. Conducts background investigations on internal and external customers that support Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) hiring practices and internal hiring managers, in compliance with state statute.
  2. Serves as first responder for any incident that may occur at TBI facilities, or any area TBI may be operating in.
  3. Performs law enforcement duties to protect themselves and others. (Including but not limited to using force, up to and including deadly force; performing strenuous physical activity such as pursuing, subduing, and/or apprehending suspects; participating in physical training activities such as Close Quarters Conflict Control (CQC), firearms qualification and weapons handling; and operating vehicles in emergency and non-emergency situations, etc.).
  4. Serves as initial contact for anyone who conducts business at TBI facilities to support all agency operations. Maintains proficient institutional knowledge in multiple operational systems to collaborate with supervisors, peers, the general public, and other law enforcement agencies.
  5. Assists TBI Special Agents in investigative operations (e.g., including but not limited to human trafficking operations, executing search warrants and arrest warrants, prisoner transports, securing crime scenes, etc.) in support of investigative activities.
  6. Performs routine security checks to ensure the safety and security of all facilities and personnel.
  7. Monitors access control systems, to include security cameras, to ensure only authorized personnel access secure areas.
  8. Verifies that critical facility infrastructure is operating within acceptable parameters to ensure a safe working environment and ensure seamless communication between other law enforcement agencies is not interrupted.

  1. Knowledgeable of relevant law enforcement equipment, policy, state and federal law.
  2. Utilizes integrity and trust in maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
  3. Skilled at controlling operations of equipment or systems (e.g., access control systems, camera systems, etc.).
  4. Utilizes problem solving skills to anticipate issues and determine resolutions.
  5. Utilizes knowledge and skills to understand and maintain awareness of other's behavior.
  6. Skilled in effective written communication to produce case reports, search warrants, affidavits, arrest warrants, and emails.
  7. Ability to utilize finger dexterity and hand strength to operate the slide of a standard issued firearm.
  8. Ability to alternate from standing to prone to standing position utilizing stamina, strength, and coordination to perform the physical duties of a Police Officer.

TN Driver Standards

State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
