Overview

Southern Cancer Center is seeking a Part-Time Registered Nurse (RN) to join our compassionate and skilled oncology team. This position supports our Daphne and Foley offices and plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in a dynamic outpatient oncology setting.

Position Summary

The RN is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, evaluating, and promoting the continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices. This includes direct patient care, clinical operations, interprofessional collaboration, and specialty-specific responsibilities in infusion and/or transplant care.


Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities Patient Assessment & Care Planning
  • Interview patients to assess current health status and medical history.
  • Perform and document comprehensive nursing assessments.
  • Review and report lab results, imaging, and psychosocial assessments to providers.
  • Identify patient/family needs and provide education and psychosocial support.
Therapy Administration
  • Prepare and administer medications, blood products, and therapies under physician supervision.
  • Ensure correct medication, dosage, route, timing, and technique.
  • Obtain pre-authorizations and consent forms as required.
  • Monitor for adverse reactions and facilitate dose modifications based on labs and protocols.
  • Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line devices.
Clinical Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care and treatments.
  • Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and ensure proper charge capture.
  • Follow OSHA guidelines for handling cytotoxic agents and biohazardous materials.
  • Maintain disinfection protocols and equipment quality control standards.
Clinical Operations & Patient Flow
  • Manage patient medication refill requests and document in the EMR.
  • Assist physicians with exams and procedures.
  • Maintain efficient patient flow in and out of exam rooms.
  • Schedule consultations, diagnostic tests, procedures, and follow-up appointments.
  • Triage patient phone calls and coordinate communication between patients, families, and the care team.
  • Assist patients in accessing community resources.
Interprofessional Collaboration
  • Collaborate with clinical research teams as needed.
  • Act as a resource for LPNs, LVNs, and medical assistants.
  • Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices when necessary.
  • Participate in professional development and maintain current oncology nursing knowledge.
Specialty-Specific Responsibilities Infusion RN
  • Program and manage portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on pump use and maintenance.
  • Clean and document pump usage according to protocol.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred).
  • Current RN license in the state of Alabama.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • 0-3 years of nursing experience (oncology experience preferred).
  • Must meet continuing education requirements.
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and radiation typical of an oncology clinic.
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and perform full range of body motion.
  • Requires manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision/hearing.
