The Translational Neuroimmunology Lab directed by Dr. Sarah Lutz in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking highly energetic and organized applicants for a full-time Visiting Research Scientist position. This role will involve managing a large transgenic mouse colony and conducting neuro-behavioral and neuro-immunological analysis. Our research focus is understanding how blood-brain barrier dysfunction contributes to neuroimmunological diseases in preclinical animal models relevant to COVID-19/Long COVID, vascular dementia, and multiple sclerosis. Experimental procedures include behavioral tests, histology, microscopy, biochemical assays, and cell culture models. Expertise is required with either flow cytometry or with quantitative immunofluorescent microscopy. Duties and Responsibilities Writing manuscripts and giving presentations of the data. Writing competitive grant applications with the assistance of the PI. Working with and training graduate and undergraduate students and the lab. Manage a large mouse colony including colony maintenance and genotyping. Maintain detailed colony spread sheets. Conduct behavioral analysis and maintain equipment. Work as part of a team to generate mice for projects on defined schedules. Inject mice with different treatments. Ensure that laboratory procedures comply with all safety requirements. Perform mouse surgery. Perform immunohistochemical and biochemical analysis. Qualifications: Experience in colony maintenance, genotyping and mouse treatment is essential. Expertise is required with either flow cytometry or with quantitative immunofluorescent microscopy. Experience in mouse behavior and tissue collection (perfusions, brain dissection) is preferred. Enthusiasm for learning and gaining research and lab management experience, and the ability to coordinate and supervise others effectively are the most critical requirements of the position. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and organized, and strong communication skills are a must. This position requires three years of previous research experience, a Ph.D degree in immunology, neuroscience, or other related fields.
