The Position

The Sutton Commons is Roanoke College's all-you-care-to-eat dining commons, located in the Colket Community Center. "The Commons" serves students, faculty, staff, and other campus guests. This part-time non-benefitted position reports to Sutton Commons management. The Cook I is versatile and may support production in many different areas of the kitchen, including cold and hot food production and our grab & go production. To thrive in our work environment, a Cook I must be open to learning different roles and doing different tasks. In addition, the Cook I provides excellent customer service, pays strong attention to details, and can work in fast-paced environments while interacting with guests and staff. Work shifts and schedules vary depending on the position. Weekend work is essential. The anticipated start date for this position is August 11th.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a representative of Roanoke College, displaying courtesy, tact and respect in all interaction with our students, members of the RC community and with the public.
  • Serve customers with enthusiasm in a positive and friendly manner
  • Apply proper methods of safety and sanitation as instructed by the VDH and Dining Services.
  • Supports daily operations and works with peers and management to provide excellent food and service.
  • Prepare cold foods, salads, fruits and vegetables for service.
  • Prepare hot foods, including vegetables, stocks and sauces, and proteins for service.
  • Prepare and assemble pre-packaged foods for grab & go sales in retail locations.
  • Follows prep lists for food production and pull lists for pulling foods from refrigeration or freezers.
  • Monitor conditions and temperatures for different types of storage areas, including ambient/non-refrigerated, refrigerated, and frozen.
  • Alerts managers to discrepancies or product damage.
  • Follows regulations as set forth by Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority.
  • Responsible for labeling and rotation of prepared foods and bulk inventory.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean working environment and storage, seating, and service area.
  • Complete station assignment responsibilities and help elsewhere as needed.
  • Follow policy and procedures as established by Dining Service Management.
  • Ensure daily and weekly cleaning tasks are completed as required in the dining room and storeroom
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Depending on assignment, mornings, weekday and weekend availability required.
  • Ability to meticulously maintain a clean and safe food service environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to solve problems and work independently.
  • Positive communication with guests and co-workers is essential
  • Required to obtain ServSafe certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Dining services/ restaurant experience recommended.
