POSITION SPECIFICS

The primary purpose of this position is to support the mental health of Penn State COM students through counseling, consultation, and outreach.

Essential Functions

  • Provide individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling, initial assessments, crisis intervention, and consultation to students regarding a variety of mental health and developmental concerns
  • Demonstrate a commitment to multicultural competency
  • Plan and implement outreach programming for mental health related topics
  • Provide consultation services for staff and faculty colleagues, students, and parents consistent with ethical guidelines, including confidentiality
  • Conduct training in helping, interpersonal, and coping skills to student leaders, classes, and others upon request
  • Maintain documentation that meets legal, professional, and ethical standards of practice for clinicians
  • Be available for other duties as assigned
  • Participate in meetings related to administrative, planning, and/or clinical issues

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Required: An earned Master's degree from an accredited program in counseling psychology, Clinical Psychology, Clinical Social Work, Counseling, or relevant mental health field. Demonstrate a commitment to multicultural competency. Experience working in a college or university counseling center is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations

Required: Licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to practice clinical services within their area of competency.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Analytical skills necessary for collection and assessment of psychosocial data, interpretation of data and ongoing review of treatment efficiency and effectiveness
  • A solid understanding, and an ability to use and apply different concepts, theories, principles, practices, and terminology within counseling or clinical psychology
  • Demonstrated ability to make ethical decisions and maintain ethical standards
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work within strict deadlines
  • Desire to be a team player
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional customer services skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills (i.e. ability to deal effectively with others; speak professionally on the phone, etc.)
  • Familiarity with industry terms and processes
  • Ability to use a multi-line phone system
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability learn a new data management/scheduling system
  • Ability to present on a range of mental health and student wellness topics

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
