Key Position Details: Join Allina Health Cancer Institute (AHCI) as a Registered Nurse and play a pivotal role in our expanding early lung cancer detection program. You'll be at the forefront of patient care, coordinating and guiding patients through increased volumes of referrals, and supporting our innovative AI-augmented incidental nodule findings program. Your expertise will be crucial in managing the growing demand and ensuring high-quality care for our patients.
- Position will be based out of the AHCI United Clinic in St. Paul and may include some time onsite at AHCI Abbott Northwestern
- Full time position (80 hours every two-week period)
- 8-hour, day shifts
- May include occasional weekends
Job Description: Nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human response to actual or potential health problems. This includes establishing an intentional therapeutic relationship between a registered nurse and a patient and family. As a leader and the integrator of care, the professional nurse has the responsibility, authority, and accountability for planning, coordinating and evaluating the patient's care needs.
Provide comprehensive patient care for lung cancer screening and incidental lung nodule findings within Allina Health and Allina Health's Cancer Institute (AHCI). Ensures efficient access to care, educates patients, families, and the community, and evaluates patient outcomes. Serve as a liaison within a multidisciplinary team supporting lung cancer screening and lung nodule programs across AHCI's locations. May provide nursing support remotely or in-person at various Allina Health clinic locations, dependent on patient needs. Community engagement is also a vital aspect of this role.
Principle Responsibilities
- Referral Intake and Management:
- Manage and follow up on incidental lung nodule referrals, high-risk lung nodules identified through imaging, Epic processes, and lung cancer screenings.
- Review of incoming referrals to the nodule clinics to determine appropriate scheduling parameters based upon chart review and collaboration with the care team.
- Conduct phone calls to gather additional information as needed for case review and to coordinate the needs of their referral.
- Patient Education and Support
- Educate patients about lung nodules, their potential causes (benign or cancerous), and the importance of follow-up care.
- Address patient concerns and answer questions about the diagnosis, treatment options, and potential risks.
- Prepare patients for imaging procedures (CT scans, biopsies) and explain what to expect.
- Offer compassionate support and reassurance to patients and their families.
- Contribute to smoking cessation programs.
- Patient Assessment and Care Coordination:
- Track scheduled procedures and coordinate pathology results.
- Review patient's medical history and assess their risk factors for lung cancer.
- Conduct physical examinations and monitor patients' symptoms.
- Coordinate appointments, tests, and treatments, ensuring an efficient patient experience.
- Partners with pulmonologists, surgeons, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Monitor nodule size and characteristics through imaging studies and communicate findings to the healthcare team.
- Follow-up, Coordination and Management:
- Facilitate patient continuity of care and provide follow-up for laboratory, radiology, and pathology procedures.
- Collaborate with scheduling teams for procedure-based scheduling needs, and ensure follow-up appoints are scheduled.
- Monitor patients' response to treatment and address any side effects or complications.
- Collaborate with procedural care, scheduling, medical oncology, radiology oncology, cardiothoracic teams, and lung cancer screening.
- Coordinate the timing of post-hospital pulmonary nodule care needs.
- Team & Program planning, support, operations and growth - additional responsibilities:
- Conduct pre-visit planning for provider schedules to ensure appropriate patients are on the provider's schedule.
- Supporting Lung Cancer Screening and cross coverage across early lung cancer detection program continuum.
- Attend and contribute to weekly multidisciplinary thoracic tumor board conferences.
- Onboard and educate new team members.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum Associates degree graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- 2+ years nursing experience in an ambulatory or hospital care setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- 2+ years RN experience supporting pulmonology or critical care patients
- 1+ years experience as RN care coordinator or RN clinical care navigator role
Licenses/Certifications
- Licensed Registered Nurse - MN Board of Nursing required if working in the state of MN upon hire
- Licensed Registered Nurse - WI Dept of Safety & Professional Services required if working in the state of WI upon hire
- May require both state licenses based on the services provided at the locations assigned
- Must meet at least ONE of the requirements below:
Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association Current BLS certification from the American Red Cross Allina in-house BLS training (within 30 days of hire) - Advanced Nursing Certifications preferred such as:
Ambulatory Care Nursing certification (AMB-BC) Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN)

Pay Range
Pay Range: $43.65 to $60.40 per hour
The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
