JOB SUMMARY, DESCRIPTION & QUALIFICATIONS:

Job Summary

This individual works directly with the Truck Driving faculty in the operation of the Truck Driving Program.This is a Grant Funded, Limited Term Employment (LTE) position that is expected to end by June 30, 2027.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodation.

Direct Support:

  • Provide direct support to faculty during the training of students.

  • Prepare tractors, trailers, and driving courses for student activities

  • Assist the faculty with the setting up of activities for students.

  • Assist the faculty in monitoring students on operational safety.

  • Monitor the use and prepare the driving pad and vehicles for student use.

  • As requested by the faculty, assist students practicing on various driving techniques.

  • Issue driving procedures and assist faculty by ensuring students operate vehicles in a safe manner.

  • Recommend procedural and safety discussion topics to the faculty based on observed student practices.

  • Demonstrate skills as needed with the direction of the faculty.

  • Treat all students and customers with respect at all times.

  • Maintain proficiency in the truck driving field as needed to support the Truck Driving program.

Administrative/Classroom:

  • Proctor tests, quizzes and performance assessments.

  • Monitor attendance and use of vehicles.

  • Assist in the documentation of maintenance and gas usage of vehicles.

  • Maintain an inventory of instructional materials and equipment within the lab.

  • Report repair requirements on all vehicles to faculty and the transportation technician.

  • Participate in in-service training and industrial workshops pertaining to the operations and applications of vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications Required

In limited circumstances, NTC may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position.

Education:High School Education / GED

Must have a valid Class A Wisconsin CDL license

Experience:2 Years

Additional Experience Information:

  • Two years (4,000 hours) occupational experience appropriate to the position.

  • Thorough understanding of the truck driving industry and terms, including DOT requirements, CDL testing, drug and alcohol testing and proper safety protocols.

  • Must possess a valid Class A Wisconsin CDL and have the ability to pass the college insurance standards, as well as adhere to the DOT testing guideline and regulations. Must be able to work with students of various backgrounds, ages and capabilities in an educational setting.

  • The Instructional Assistant must be able to provide student feedback professionally and have adequate computer skills to assist students with course software. Must pass drug test prior to hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, including language skills, reasoning and mathematical abilities are essential.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, emails and memos; discuss information one-on-one and in small groups.

Math Skills:

Ability to add and subtract numbers using basic units of measurement.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to critically think and solve problems involving a variety of concrete variables with limited standardization; interpret written, oral and diagrammed instructions.

Technical Skills:

Ability to navigate to and between computer applications; read/reply to emails, open/save/close files and applications; find, format and print documents; operate common office equipment.

Customer Service Skills:

Ability to actively listen, discern key information, and respond professionally; ask follow up or clarifying questions to diffuse escalated situations and offer appropriate problem resolution when necessary.
