Part-Time Student Advisor for Adult Education

Hourly Rate: $25.21

This position is a grant-funded, on-campus, part-time, up to 19-hour appointment based in Champaign, Illinois.

The part-time Adult Education Student Advisor will oversee the intake and assessment process and place students in appropriate classes. Advisors work with the Associate Director to establish and implement recruitment and retention strategies. This position is responsible for assisting students in overcoming personal and social barriers as they work towards career and educational goals. The part-time Advisor works on a schedule established by the Associate Director.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Recruit, orient, and register new students.
  • Assess student skill level and enroll in appropriate course.
  • Provide retention and follow-up of current and former students.
  • Collaborate with partner agencies to provide support services as needed for identified students: career assessment, mentoring, advising, and linkages to other resources.
  • Track student acquisition of support services
  • Assist with tracking and reporting of student progress toward goal completion and highlighting student success stories.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Education or related field.
  • Experience working with adult learners and non-traditional students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including speaking in front of large and small groups, ability to listen effectively and respond accordingly.
  • Demonstrated competence working with a diverse population.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check with fingerprinting.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
